London 2012: Days 14, 15, and 16

What a great Olympiad!!

Team USA ended things on a high note.  Our boys from the Thunder did us proud to help bring home the gold medal for Team USA basketball.  It was an awesome game!!  Australia squeaked by us in men’s water polo, but nothing wrong with a silver.

I gotta say that I wasn’t all that impressed with the Closing Ceremony.  It was sort of boring watching a bunch of models prancing around.  It just seemed off compared to the Opening Ceremony.  The opener was all about the history and people and the closing was pale in comparison to it.

Here’s the final medal count….

London 2012: Days 11, 12, and 13

It’s been an interesting couple of days at the Olympics.  I’ve only watched it spiratically, as I’ve had lots going on with homeschool lesson plans and such!!

One of the most surprising is that our men’s volleyball is out of the run for a medal.  So is our men’s water polo.

In the best news, we had no way of losing the medal in women’s beach volleyball.  Both of our teams played for GOLD!!  Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh ended up beating April Ross and Jennifer Kessy.  I think it’s only fitting that May-Treanor/Walsh won as Misty has made it clear that she’s retiring after these Olympics.  I’ve always loved them as a team and I can see the potential in Ross/Kessy.

I’ve pretty much lost respect for Usain Bolt.  I know that he’s an awesome runner and he’s accomplished so much.  He represents his country well.  He’s got a big head though.  He needs to learn how to be more humble and grateful.  On top of that, he’s bad mouthing Carl Lewis.  That just makes Bolt a total jerk!!  I just have no respect or interest in people like that.

Our women’s water polo went for their first gold!!  It was an amazing game and those girls earned it.

We’ve pulled quite a bit ahead in the medal count.  I’m so proud of Team USA!!  The current medal count is…..

London 2012: Days 8, 9, and 10

I have to admit, I haven’t been watching much of the Olympics the past couple of days. I just haven’t been in the mood. Plus, there’s been great movies on Summer Under the Stars on TCM.

I did catch Michael Phelps get the last of his gold medals. What a way to end a career!! Our women did great in swimming too.

Unfortunately with the ups comes some downs. Some of our key teams are out. We still have some really good chance in track & field and other games on the court. Time will tell now. The games are winding down a bit though.

Here’s the medal standings…..

London 2012: Days 6 and 7

It’s been an interesting couple of days at the Olympics.  At this point, the USA has taken the lead in the medal count.

Today we watched Dalhausser/Rogers lose their beach volleyball match.  That puts them out of getting a medal for these Olympics.  It’s really a shame, but it happens.

Our swimmers were HOT!!  Michael Phelps has a record number with one more to race to go.  That one will be a relay.  Our ladies are doing fantastic too.  I’m really enjoying the swimming this year.  I enjoyed what Phelps had to say about the young ones coming up.  Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was on hand to watch the events too!!

Gabby Douglas got the gold medal and 2 Soviet’s got the silver and bronze.  It was a tie with Ally of the US for the bronze, but in a tie breaker, the Soviet came out on top.

Women’s volleyball is on a roll too.  Women’s water polo wins again too.  Track and Field had many of their opening events as well.  The US earned the silver medal in shot-put.  That’s one that I did as a young girl!!

Here’s the latest medal count…..

London 2012: Days 3, 4, and 5

It’s been a busy time around the house and it’s been a great couple of days in Olympic action.  Where do I begin!?!?

It was amazing watching the women’s gymnastics!!  You just couldn’t help being totally wrapped up in the action.  You could feel that spirit and pride flow through you.  It was amazing and at the same time, it was hard to see the Russian’s in so much pain of missing out on medal.  Then again, it happened to our men’s team as well.

We got to see Michael Phelps get the record number of Olympic medals too.  So far, he’s pretty much shown up those on our own team who took aim at him.  Our women swimmers are doing great too.  Scored a couple more medals there!!

Beach volleyball is one of our favorites.  We saw May-Trainer and Walsh win their match.  The next day, Dalhausser and Rogers won theirs too, but it was a really close one.  The water polo match is so exciting.  Those guys are on a roll.  They’re not bad to look at either!!  HAHA

Men’s beach volleyball played today and they looked way better than the match we saw the other day.  They were on it!!  Women’s volleyball was amazing today!!  We beat China in 3 strait games, but the last one was a rough one.  There was 5 match points!!  We looked really rough in gymnastics, but one of our guys still took home the bronze.  One of the best views today was women’s swimming!!  I can’t tell you how exciting it was, as you just had to see it yourself.  Fantastic!!

London 2012: Day 2

Today was another great day of Olympics!!  Other than a break to watch the Brickyard 400, we watched Olympics all day long.  I have to say though, it was a great race!!  Jimmy Johnson won his 4th race at Indianapolis.  Best of all, Dale Jr took the points lead!!  WooHoo  It’s the first time since 2004 that he’s been in this position.

It was actually a day of disappointment in London too.  Ryan Lochte lost the lead in the 4x 100m.  Phelps had us in good position and Lochte had the final leg, but finished in 2nd.  We ended up with a silver medal out of it, but we really shouldn’t have lost that gold.  I say Lochte and Phelps are now tied up for the performances!!

In other sad news, Jordyn Wieber won’t be doing the all-around for Team USA.  She was scored incredibly unfair.  Trust me, that’s not just my opinion.  With the new format, only the top 2 scoring members of each country move on to the all-around.  For us, it’ll be Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas.  Of course, Jordyn still gets to perform her individual routine, but it’s a shame that the reigning World Champion won’t go to the all-around.

Rhodes took the gold medal in clay shooting.  She’s totally awesome!!  Also, Dana Vollmer not only got the gold, but set the new world record for the 100m butterfly.  She was flawless in the pool!!  In the ladies synchronized 3m springboard diving, we got a silver and they were fascinating to watch.

The other big event that we watched today was men’s water polo.  We beat Montenegro.  It wasn’t a medal round, but it was a great game and sends us on!!

Today’s medal count is…..

London 2012: Day 1

For those that follow my blog or are regular readers, you know that I absolutely love the Olympics.  I’ve been looking forward to this time for months.  I’m all about TEAM USA!!  Being such a fan, I post regular medal counts and often give my opinions of the day’s events.  It doesn’t mean I’ll post them every day or that I won’t have regular posts during this time.  However, I do enjoy them and hope that you like my coverage of the Olympics.

I think the biggest story is probably Michael Phelps not getting a medal today in the 400 IM.  However, we did get a gold medal with Ryan Lochte in the same event.  It was quite exciting!!  No matter, I still think Phelps is going to get at least a couple medals this year.  Our women’s beach volleyball squeaked one through today and move on, as well as the woman’s volleyball taking a win.

Our men’s archery got a bronze today.  I just love watching that.  I did archery often when I was little and loved it even then.  The bows they use for competition is so different than what I used in school though.  The other 3 medals that we got today all came in swimming events.  I watched the ladies 4x and was yelling for them to pull ahead.

Here’s today’s medal count…..

Rank

1 China 4 0 2 6
2 Italy 2 2 1 5

14 Hungary 0 0 1 1
14 Norway 0 0 1 1
14 Serbia 0 0 1 1
14 Uzbekistan 0 0 1 1

We usually pick an additional country to root for. Kiddo likes Switzerland and Belgium. I’m a fan of Great Britain and Australia.  Who are you rooting for??  What’s your favorite event??

Closing Ceremony

Today, the Winter Olympics of 2010 reached their climax.  What a day it was!!  The U.S. hockey team gave Canada a run for their money.  Down 2-0, the U.S. rallied back to tie the game up at the end of the 3rd.  However, in overtime, Canada scored the winning point and celebrated.  The U.S. team looked so dejected and sad.  The goalie, Miller, looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders.  They had nothing to hang their heads in shame for.  They put up a valiant effort and Canada didn’t take the game by storm.  We’re proud of you U.S.!!

The recaps of the events were good as some of them were almost hard to remember since they happened early.  At the Closing Ceremony, the U.S. came out in style!!  They looked great and you could tell that they were all happy to be there.  Even Miller was there with a smile on his face.  I loved how the Canadians laughed at themselves over the malfunction of the Opening Ceremony.  And how cool was that, that the girl that didn’t get to light the flame did this time.

I’m so proud of all the American athletes.  I think we did really well and put on quite the show.  They have a reason to stand proud and I’m proud of them.  They performed well and maintained a good standard of behavior and effort.  I think some other countries should be ashamed of things that happened over there…..that includes Canadians.  Canada put on some of the best Olympics I’ve seen, but the conduct of the Canadian female hockey team was outrageous.  We had an American asked to leave because of a “lude” photo in which everyone was clothed, but having a party to celebrate.  Yet those women were on the ice drinking beer (some underage) and smoking cigars.  Pretty classless and not an equal treatment.  Then there’s the Russian skater and I’m not even going to mention his name.  He was horrible and a sore loser and should have been punished.  After all, Bolt was for his celebration at the finish line in the Summer Olympics.  Come on IOC…..fare treatment here!!  Other than a few incidents like that….and they’ll happen anyplace….it was a great show.  Loved the events and looked forward to seeing what was going to happen the next night.

Alright, with all that said, I need to do the final medal count.  There was a total of 25 countries that won medals.  They were all winners though!!  The U.S. finally beat Germany for total medal count and Canada won the Gold medal count.  There’s a good variety of countries, including a few small ones.  I always love to see the underdog on the podium!!  Here’s the final medal count as I close out my Olympics updates….

Ice Dancing into Everyone’s Hearts

Tonight was the final night of ice dancing.  It was quite the amazing show.  Personally, I think the crowd behind the Candadians helped them to win.  That said, they also deserved it!!  It was going to be a toss-up between the young Americans and the Canadians.  The Canadians won the gold and did it in prime fashion.  It was beautiful!!  However, the older American dancer, Belbin and Agosto, came in 4th.  That was wrong on so many levels.  I can’t tell you how upset I am that the Russians came in 3rd.  First of all yesterday, their costumes were hideous, to be nice.  The ice dancing wasn’t all that good either.  Then tonight, they come out and have costumes with belts on them so that they can use them during the ice dance program.  He hangs her out only holding her belt and she practically rips his pants down holding his belt.  I counted about 4 times they used these belts instead of ice dancing.  In the end, the announcers said that because of that, next year it’s expected the rules will change on the costumes.  They should have changed it this year!!  They use the belts as a tool to skate while everyone else IS skating.  And then the Russians had the nerve to say that the Canadians only won because they were home.  Now I think it helped, but it’s NOT the reason that they did.

US hockey was off today.  YAY!!  We’re kicking some big butts!!  In curling, the US men and women lost again.  I think all hope is gone now.  We’ll keep watching as we’re huge fans of curling, but somehow, our curlers just aren’t up to par.  We still have more skiing and more short track to come and that should be quite the show.

Well, I think that covers my synopsis tonight.  Here’s the final medal count….

Photography Contest – Elements

Miss K’s photography class is doing another photography contest.  There was one a couple weeks ago, but I didn’t have enough time to post it because it had such a short duration.  That was due to lack of power here in town from that ice storm.

Here are the letter and directions on how to vote from K’s teacher….

Hello,

Our Photography Class is having another photography contest. The topic is “Elements”, which can include just about anything – but I think the students narrowed it down nicely. They chose natural elements to depict in their photos and I think they did a very nice job! Now we need YOUR help to determine which student should win.

Choose ELEMENTS from the drop down menu.

Log in using your e-mail address or name – or just put anonymous in the blank if you would like . Once logged in you will see the entries. They are numbered #1, #2, #3 and #4.

Choose the BEST PICTURE and e-mail your vote to me at patty.patterson@sbcglobal.net

Things to keep in mind are (1) How well does the photo fit the topic?, (2) Is the photo in focus?, (3) Is the focus on the subject itself or something else in the picture?, (4) Is the photo well framed? (5) Is the photo creative at all or does it look like a simple snapshot?

Please remember that some of the students are very young and they are using point and shoot cameras for the most part.

And please e-mail in your votes by midnight on Tuesday, February the 23rd.

Thanks so much,
Patty

Now, to tell or not to tell which photo is Miss K’s!?!?  HHMMM  Let me just say that hers is an element that would be found in or on the ground at her grandparents house.  It has a sparkle to it, but you can’t wear it.  HAHA  Alright, that’s all you get.  I do expect you to vote for the best picture and to be fair.  She did a great job though and I’m very proud of her for this one.  I love all her photos, but I know that she put extra work into this one.

So now, it’s time for out rundown of today’s Olympics!!  Our ladies won in curling for their first game.  The men changed their line-up and brought in the alternate.  However, I can’t tell you if it worked or not because I don’t remember the final score.  Canada is kicking some butt too!!  Our American men got silver and bronze today skiing. and competition started for ice dancing.  The skeleton was so much fun to watch.  I think that’s something I could try!!  HEHE  The Brits have gotten a medal now and we’re up to 25 countries with medals.  Awesome!!

I just have to say this…..I’m so tired of that Russian skater, Evgeni Pleshinko, whining.  I swear he’s driving me nuts.  Yes, he did a quad.  So what!?!?  The rest of his program wasn’t as good.  He didn’t catch as many edges.  He wobbled.  And the end of the program was totally boring because he did all the big moves up front.  You have to keep it going, and you have to put the effort into the bonus part of the program.  Pleshinko got silver for pity sakes….that’s nothing to whine over.  Be a man!!

Ok, with that said, today’s medal count on Day 7 is….

Medal Count for Day 6

Tonight was an awesome night for Olympics.  Actually, all day was!!  The American ladies won at hockey again, but our men’s curling lost by a point.  We’re now 0-3 and probably not going to medal.  Kiddo and I were watching curling while we had our teeth cleaned today!!  HAHA

Lindsey Vonn didn’t medal today in the combined, but the US lady that got silver to Lindsey yesterday got it again today.  I do wonder if she’ll wear her tierra!?!?  Men’s figure skating was fantasic to the end!!  Evan skated a great program, but it was doubtful that he’d beat the Russian.  However, the Russian program just wasn’t what it should be….very busy at the beginning and no enduring qualities in the end.  It was a great match-up for the gold though and worth watching every minute!!

Here’s the medal count for the end of day 6….

I just love seeing all these countries that are starting to medal now.  24 different countries so far and we even have a couple ties in the number of medals.  Even the Aussies got a gold in ladies snowboarding today.  Now how do those ladies down under get that darn good??  HAHA  We’re even seeing some of the smaller countries or countries with a small delegation get medals.  Events like this truly brings out the best in people.  You can help but be proud when you see your country up there on the podium.  Or even when there is no medal, you can see all that they’ve put into getting where they are.

Stay tuned for my Olymics right here with the rest of the Commotion!!
