Flashback Friday: Singin’ in the Rain

Today for Flashback Friday, I’m going back to a movie that TCM celebrated yesterday for it’s 60th anniversary, Singin’ in the Rain.  This movie was shown again on the big screen in select theaters across the US.  It was originally released 27 March 1952 in NY and 9 April 1952 in LA.  At the time, it wasn’t considered to be that good of a movie.
Singin' in the Rain movie poster
Singin’ in the Rain had an all-star cast with Gene Kelly (Don Lockwood), Donald O’Connor (Cosmo Brown), and Debbie Reynolds (Kathy Selden).  It also featured Jean Hagen (Lina Lamont) and Cyd Charisse.  The film was directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelley and it was produced by Arthur Freed.    The premise (from IMDb) is “a silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound. “  This leads to lots of laughs….and plenty of dancing!!

Gene Kelly by far has one of the best scenes in the movie.  That would be the singing/dancing scene in the rain.  The fact that it’s filmed in Technicolor helps to add to many of the parts of the movie, including this one.  As only Don Lockwood could sing and dance it…..

I’m singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin’
I’m happy again
I’m laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I’ve a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin’,
Singin’ in the rain

Dancin’ in the rain
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
I’m happy again!
I’m singin’ and dancin’ in the rain!

I’m dancin’ and singin’ in the rain…

Gene Kelly in the famous dance scene in the rain
Donald O’Connor has some great lines in this film too!!  He’s also an amazing dance talent himself.  Cosmo Brown can “make ’em laugh” with lines like, “Short people have long faces, and long people have short faces. Big people have little humor, and little people have no humor at all. ” He also delivered some zingers to Lina.

Debbie Reynolds is spectacular through the whole movie.  She’s cute and perky.  Most of all, she’s right on cue with both men in the dance scenes.  She’s a true pro and has such natural talent.  I think this part was made for her!!

Umbrella dance scene
To me, this is one of the greatest musicals of all time.  The elements of comedy keep it fun and entertaining.  The amount of pure talent is just amazing throughout the entire film.  Despite all this, I’ve also read that this is on-point enough to be a documentary to the changing times when Hollywood first went to talkies.  This is a must-see movie whether your an avid classic movie fan, a musical lover, or even just someone who occasionally appreciates the oldies.  This is a feel-good movie that will make you want to get up and sing and dance yourself!!  Don’t be surprised if the next time it rains, you grab your umbrella and so splash around some puddles!!
