Surprise!!

So kiddo and I went out yesterday and did a little shopping and took care of some errands.  When we got home, there was a message on the answering machine from my Dad.  I couldn’t figure out why since I’d just talked to him early in the morning.  So, I call them right away to see what’s up.

surprise

Low and behold, they inform me that they’ve decided to come see us THIS weekend!!  My mom has declared this a little mini-vacation.  She’s determined that she’s not going anyplace or do anything the whole time that she’s here.  YAY!!  I’m so happy and excited.  I love my parents so much and I love it when they do little things like this.  It’s a different schedule than usual though because Mom has to be back to work on Monday instead of them leaving as usual on Monday.  But, they’re also arriving a day earlier than usual!

I’m so looking forward to some special family time.  To top it all off, we’re supposed to have a cool down and possibly get a little much needed rain.  It should make for a wonderful weekend and for some enjoyable time together.  Now, it’s time to plan my menu!!

What do you have going on??  Any surprises in your life??

The Commotion

So I know, you’re wondering just where I’ve been.  Well, I’ve not been sitting idle, that’s for sure!!

Kiddo has taken a “break” from her volunteering at the animal shelter.  The schedule of working with Doc has changed and it just doesn’t work with us homeschooling through summer.  We’re enjoying having a little more time on our hands though.  Then again, it’s not in our hands….it’s spent in the books!!

Homeschool is going well.  So far summer has mostly been spent on Geometry.  We also have some science labs planned, but we’ll handle those after Miss K’s last summer visit to see my parents.  She’s also working on Latin, but I’m just not much help.  I know teaching her, I should be, but I never liked foreign language.  All’s not lost though because my Dad happens to be great at Latin, so she gets a lot of work in then!!

My weight has been stable for going on 2 years now.  I’m still walking when I can.  It should be more often, but it is what it is.  At least I’m getting some activity in!!  I’m very happy with where I’m at and I know those final 10 pounds will come when it’s time.  The one thing that I haven’t done much of is photography and I’m really looking forward to getting behind the camera again.  I miss it and just haven’t taken as many opportunities as I should to get photos.

I’m happy to say that my shops are doing alright.  I’m trying to keep them stocked with new printables.  Don’t forget if you’re in need of educational or Christian printables, be sure to check out my stores (the buttons are in the left-hand column)!!

So what else can I tell you!?!?  Other than that, life is just busy.  We’re always doing something and trying not to let things slip through the schedule.  Unfortunately, my blog does seem to suffer a bit.  It always picks up once school starts, and that’s just not far off any more.  RE is just around the corner.  Can you believe it’s July already??  I’m thrilled though because the heat is on!!

How’s your summer been??  What have you been up to??

Easter Write-the-Room

I’ve been working hard on activities for class this week. I like for my kids to have fun and understand the importance of Easter at the same time.  I’ll be doing a couple different posts of what we’ll be doing with the littles this week.

This first activity is a writing one.  In fact, it’s a write-the-room.

My plan is to put the signs around the gym.  Then we’ll each take 2-3 kids and walk around telling them what each symbol on the card is.  The kids will then trace that word on the page.  After we go to each “station”, they’ll go back to their desks and color the pictures.  Note, this is for little ones that can’t write (only trace) yet.

Here’s a sample of each page….

I also typed up a script that we’ll use at each “station” to describe the picture and symbol.  If you’re interested in those definition, just click here.  You can use it as is, or put it into your own words.

Come back again soon because I’ll be posting more for this week’s lesson!!

I’m 6 Years Old!!

Alright, so it’s not me….it’s the blog!!

Commotion is 6 years old today.  I can’t believe that!!  Time has gone so fast.

I know that I blog a lot less than I used to, but I still enjoy it.  I feel like I’ve finally taken ownership of it made this blog all mine.  That means that I had to give up on the idea of having lots of followers and readers, but it was a sacrafice worth making.  It allows me to blog about whatever I want and not just stick to one single topic.

Normally, I’d give you a bunch of stats from the past year.  I can’t do that this year, as I moved the blog to a hosted domain.  My stats only count from that point on.  That is by far, the biggest event on the blog in the past year.  The move was a lot of work, but it was well worth it.  I’m still working on moving files and making sure that links work.  In addition to that, I still get plenty of visitors on the old blog looking for my printables.  Despite signs and notes that I moved, they haven’t found there way to this new location yet.  I have hopes though!!

What has your year been like??  What do you like or dislike about the “new” blog??  What do you want to see more of….or even less of??  Let me know your thoughts on Commotion, as I always love to hear from my readers!!

The new files are once again available.  There is a couple that I’m still updating, but they’ll be able to be downloaded shortly.  Almost all my religious education materials are ready to go and I’m hoping that I’ll be adding some more very soon.

Armor of God

Tonight’s lesson was all about bringing the Armor of God to my students.  I wanted to show them in a fun way that there are things that they possess to protect them from evil.

I created a couple printable to use with my class, then I made a couple extra things in hopes that others would be able to us them.  First, there’s a set of memory match cards.  The armor is matched to its virtue.  There are also two worksheets.  One of them is “Label the Armor of God” and the other is “Armor of God Cut & Paste” where the armor is cut and glued next to the virtue.

Finally, it’s the big one!!  I called it “Roll the Armor of God”, but it has so many other uses.  It can be used to roll a die and place the Armor of God on the soldier.  This can also be used for a felt story set, which is basically how I used it with my kiddos.  I read the Bible verse to them and they dressed their doll in the armor as I read the verse.  It could also be used as a simple paper craft to do with the kids.  There’s 2 versions of this all in one download!!  There is a boy and girl soldier doll, as well as a black & white version or color version.  Then for the “Roll the Armor of God”, there’s just the virtue listed or the piece of armor with the virtue to use depending on the age of your kids.

On a side note, these activities are based on the Catholic version (NAS) of the Bible.  The only part that I didn’t use was the wording for “having girded your loins in truth”.  I chose to use “belt” instead as it’s easier for my little ones to understand.  I did choose to use “shod your feet”, as they grasped that it was shoes/boots and I didn’t want to use “sandals” as many do and hubby drew me great armor boots.

Here’s a sample of some of the items for the Armor of God (click to enlarge)….

Meet Ralph Elf

We have a new member in our family. Well, our holiday family, that is.  Yesterday, we officially adopted Ralph Elf.  He’s direct relation to all those other helpers to Santa, Elf on a Shelf.

Kiddo and I went shopping yesterday and for a couple years now, we’ve been saying we should get one.  She told me she didn’t get how they could possibly work.  (I just love how she plays along!!)  Finally yesterday, she decided it was time.  Leaving the store, I told her that she gets to name it.  I jokingly said he looks like a “Ralph” and Ralph Elf  was “born” and became ours!!

We went home and promptly filled out all his information and his new family name.  We printed out our adoption certificate so we could keep it close by him.  Miss K read the story to the dogs and they listened with great intent.  I about know what they were thinking…..FINALLY, we won’t be the only spoiled naughty ones in the house!!  We set Ralph on the tv cabinet with some other decorations and said that we hoped he’d be a good boy and just return there each night.

No such luck!!  This is where we found Ralph Elf this morning….

Now this is a definite no-no!!  That decoration is very old and delicate.  But sure enough, there he is enjoying a ride on the reindeer.  SHEESH  The kid in the picture is pretty cute too, isn’t she!?!?  It was a few years ago, but she’s still alright for a teen!!  HAHA

I’ll keep you posted on our newest holiday family member.  Right now, I’m just hoping that he doesn’t find too much trouble or he might get a punishment!!  By the way, if you head over to the Elf on the Shelf site, they have some really fun games that we wasted a fair amount of time playing yesterday afternoon.  HAHA

Books of the Bible – A Craft Project

We didn’t have class this week for the Thanksgiving holiday, so last week in class, we did a lesson on Thanksgiving.  The prior week to that, we did our Bible lesson.  This is always a great lesson with my kids, although they’re too young to remember every book of the Bible.

This year I wanted to do a craft project with them, as I usually don’t have one for this topic.  I decided to make my own.  It turned out so well, that I asked my wonderful talented hubby to do a couple drawings for me so that I can share this project with you all!!

Here’s a sample of how this craft could be completed (click to enlarge)….

For this project, the cross will be decorated.  We used tissue paper and it gave each of them a different effect.  Next, they simply colored the Bible.  For this one, they glittered the bookmark ribbon.  The Bible is then placed over the cross for final assembly.  It’s just a very simple paper craft for my little ones.

**NOTE**  This is for the Catholic version of the Bible!!

If you’re interested in this craft, just click to…..

The cross and Bible  © The Schoolhouse and may not be used in any other manner without permission.

I hope that you and your kids or class enjoy this craft project.  If you work or have older kids and would like a blank Bible for them to write the names of each of the books of the Bible, please just leave me a comment or use the “contact” button in the right hand column.  I’d love to hear from you and see how your project turns out!!

Down Again

Miss K and I have debated for a long time about changing the day that we weigh in.  It seems like Tuesday is here before we know it and it seems so soon after a weekend.  Today we finally made the change!!

One of the reasons that we want to weigh in on Wednesday is because the only days we don’t work-out are the weekends.  on Tuesday, we’re back on schedule, but sometimes still have weekend weight.  I’ve always weighed less on Wednesday then on Tuesday.  It’s been that way since the surgery.  I always weighed on Tuesday, then my appointments were always on Wednesday.  Each time, I weighed less at the appointment.

I haven’t been keeping accurate tracking for a little while.  We’re having issues with the scale recording the changes from weigh-in to weigh-in.  My record sheet has disappeared and I just haven’t taken the time to find it.  I finally found it and am back on track today!!

With that, I’ve lost another pound.  Yippy!!  That puts me closer to that 50 lbs. mark.  I’m so tired of telling people “almost 5o pounds”.  HAHA  Only 2 more lbs. before I hit a huge mark on the scale too.  I’ve set this goal and thought I’d reach it sooner, but it’s close now.  I feel like once I hit this mark, it’s all downhill!!

On another weight loss note, Miss K lost this week too.  I’m so proud of her!!  She’s working at it hard and I see her putting effort into it.  I know she struggles with this and has done a great job maintaining.  She’s a great kid and I love seeing this sort of spirit in her!!

Bedside Manner

I don’t know what the last update was on my weight loss.  My original surgeon changed duty stations and I ended up with this great replacement.  He was taking such awesome care of me.  He was working with me on the weight loss and trying to fix my UTI.    Then I found out at my August appointment that he was leaving the very beginning of September.  That left me with all these crazy emotions and fear of what my new temporary doc would be like (because my doc is returning after his deployment is over).

That brings us to my September appointment.  I arrive at my appointment to find that my doc has been detained in surgery and I need to come back about 2 hours later.  I go do some grocery shopping and return as told.  I’m the first one back and I’m checked in.  I wait close to an hour when another lady shows up and just as the doc returns from surgery, another man shows up.  We’re all called back at the same time and I wait in my room a good hour more.  I can hear the doc in the room next to me with the man that showed up last, fully knowing that my appointment time was before his.  It’s on a Wednesday, so I tell the nurse that I have to leave.  We’re talking already very late in the afternoon and I still have to get ready for my religion class.  I go to the front desk and schedule my October appointment and she can’t believe that I wasn’t seen yet.

Finally, we’re at my October appointment yesterday.  I’m there my 15 minutes prior, which is required to be seen.  If you’re not, they can and will cancel your appointment.  I waited about 45 minutes past my appointment time to be seen.  I was weighed and put in my room.  I waited some more.  The doc walks in and asks how I’m doing and I tell her “great”.  She says “oh really, well you didn’t lose much weight”.  Now mind you, she’s well over an hour late for my appointment by this time.  She informs me that I’d lost 2 lbs. since last month and that she’d discussed it with the OCS student with her.  I’m wondering why she’s discussed this with him before even seeing me and why she’s judging me without so much as talking to me.  This was my introduction to this doc…..missed my appointment last month and late to this one!!

This lady starts telling me that I haven’t lost enough weight and I inform her that it’s about the norm for me and my other doc hasn’t been worried about it in the least and that it’s been slow and steady.  I tell her that my activity and weight loss are keeping up with each other and I don’t have any huge pockets of hanging skin, of which I’m proud.  Her reply was, “let me tell you, we all get sagging skin as we get older”.  Then she shows me this chart that she drew on my medical records to show the OCS student how I’m not losing enough weight and in her exact words to me, “you’re not going to succeed and you’re eventually going to put it all back on”.

Can you imagine!?!?  What if I wasn’t as strong as I am??  What if I was having serious issues??  You can’t just talk to ANY patient that way, but especially a weight loss patient.  She’s a total freak!!  I don’t even want to discuss what a disaster my fill was.  Let’s just say that it hurt worse than any I’ve had so far and if I have may way, she’ll not do another one!!

I just want to know who these docs think they are.  They have no right to talk to anyone that way….ever!!  Thank goodness for my supportive family and my own personal strength.  She really could have gotten in my mind and caused me to fail with words like that.  I intend to prove her wrong and rub her freak face all in it!!  What a crazy witch!!

By the way, to date, I’ve lost almost 50 lbs. now.  I’m down a full 6 sizes in clothes.  Yes, it’s been slow, but it’s also been steady.  I hit a plateau early and I’m losing again.  Surgery or not, everyone will hit a plateau.  It’s the nature of the body.  She didn’t even bother to find out that I’ve had a hysterectomy and I do NOT take hormones.  And yes, that does slow the weight loss down.  DUH!!  So I’m proud of me and I can see such huge changes and so can everyone else….all for the better.

My recommendation is that she goes back to school and learns some bedside manner and stays far away from weight loss patience!!

At a Loss

Yes, I’m at a loss, but not about life or anything like that.  I lost weight today!!

I’m so happy that I can say I’m finally moving past the plateau.  For weigh-in today, I lost 1.8 pounds.  That’s the most that I’ve lost in a week since June.  I just can’t help but to feel that I’m headed in the right direction again.  It’s a good feeling!!

I had ever intention of getting back to a regular daily exercise routine, but I haven’t been able to get that far yet.  I’m just so busy.  I have been exercising, but not like my 30 minute daily routine.  It’s most important that I don’t just skip it though. Also, eating at home really helps!!  I don’t think people realize how bad eating out really is for them.  My entire family can tell the difference.

The most important thing with this fill is that I’ve had to learn how to eat all over again.  I really haven’t had this experience before.  My first fills were right after surgery.  Then, it was too much and caused me to vomit.  Because of that, I had some removed.  I had to watch what I ate, but it was still easy to get it down.  This time, it’s really closed it up, but still lets the food pass.  I have to totally wait at least 4 hours and sometimes 6 hours.  It all depends on what my previous meal was.  The more course the food is, the longer it takes to settle.

I have to say, I’m enjoying this new feeling!!  Oh, and hubby says he can see the weight loss.  I think he’s crazy, but you know at this point, it all counts!!
