Welcome to the Adult World

Happy 18th Birthday

Today is my little girls 18th birthday!! I can’t believe how fast time has gone.  She’s an amazing girl woman who brings joy to everyone that she touches.  She has a smile that brightens the world around her.  I’m so proud to be her Momma and I’m honored that God chose me to take care of this angel.

She has hopes and dreams….and I have no doubts that she’ll accomplish all of the, one way or the other.  She gives it her all in everything that she does.  She has a faith that runs deep and never doubts what God has planned for her.

As I reflect on the past 18 years, all I have is love and joy.  I know she’s not perfect, she is mine after all.  She’s truly a great kid woman and has a bright future.  I remember being told I couldn’t have kids and I remember the day I found out that I was pregnant.  Life would never be the same!!  She has always done things her way and she has amazing strength….and some that she doesn’t even know she has.  She was my partner all the times that hubby was gone due to military life.  Her dad is her buddy and they enjoy getting in trouble together.  Through it all, she knows that we’re her parents and love her unconditionally.

18th Birthday

Happy Birthday sweet girl young lady!!  Daddy and I wish you all the best today….and every day of your life to come.  We can’t wait to see what lies ahead!!  You may be grown up, but you’ll always be our little girl!!  😀

The Commotion

So I know, you’re wondering just where I’ve been.  Well, I’ve not been sitting idle, that’s for sure!!

Kiddo has taken a “break” from her volunteering at the animal shelter.  The schedule of working with Doc has changed and it just doesn’t work with us homeschooling through summer.  We’re enjoying having a little more time on our hands though.  Then again, it’s not in our hands….it’s spent in the books!!

Homeschool is going well.  So far summer has mostly been spent on Geometry.  We also have some science labs planned, but we’ll handle those after Miss K’s last summer visit to see my parents.  She’s also working on Latin, but I’m just not much help.  I know teaching her, I should be, but I never liked foreign language.  All’s not lost though because my Dad happens to be great at Latin, so she gets a lot of work in then!!

My weight has been stable for going on 2 years now.  I’m still walking when I can.  It should be more often, but it is what it is.  At least I’m getting some activity in!!  I’m very happy with where I’m at and I know those final 10 pounds will come when it’s time.  The one thing that I haven’t done much of is photography and I’m really looking forward to getting behind the camera again.  I miss it and just haven’t taken as many opportunities as I should to get photos.

I’m happy to say that my shops are doing alright.  I’m trying to keep them stocked with new printables.  Don’t forget if you’re in need of educational or Christian printables, be sure to check out my stores (the buttons are in the left-hand column)!!

So what else can I tell you!?!?  Other than that, life is just busy.  We’re always doing something and trying not to let things slip through the schedule.  Unfortunately, my blog does seem to suffer a bit.  It always picks up once school starts, and that’s just not far off any more.  RE is just around the corner.  Can you believe it’s July already??  I’m thrilled though because the heat is on!!

How’s your summer been??  What have you been up to??

The Braces are Off!!

It’s been 23 months since Miss K first had her braces put on.  But, let’s start from the beginning….

We went to one orthodontist and he just treated us like crap.  His patients while we were there seemed to be very snobby and his staff most certainly was.  We knew that fixing kiddos teeth was going to be a lot of work.  We were prepared.  However, this ortho wouldn’t even talk to us.  I asked him what he was going to do and what he expected and he said he didn’t know.  They did all the prep work and told us to come back.  We went to our next appointment and the ortho still wouldn’t talk to us.  When we went to leave, we commented that we were active duty, but only for about another year.  The receptionist jumped up and said “you’re retiring?” and we said “yes”.  She started freaking and said, “well that changes things and we’re going to have to charge you MORE”.  We couldn’t believe it.  She had us pay something and said that when we came back, she’d have the new amount.  Next appointment, the ortho didn’t want to talk to me to discuss the treatment for kiddos teeth.  In fact, he’d never seen her….only his dental hygienists had to this point.  When we left, we weren’t happy and I told the receptionist that we’d let her know.

A while later, we went to our dentist for our regular 6 month cleaning.  We told him what happened, so he contacted the orthodontist.  The jerk told him that we refuse treatment!!  Are you kidding me!?!?  I told the dentist about the money and about how the ortho had never seen Miss K, much less explained treatment to us.  He told us to forget this ortho and go to another one here in town and said that he was just as good.

Being treated the way she had been, kiddo had no desire to go back to get her teeth fixed.  We continued to have our regular 6 month cleanings and our dentist just kept reminding us that her teeth really needed to be fixed.  We knew this, but it never was an issue for her.  Despite how messed up they were, she just kept on smiling.

Moving ahead about 2 years after our first orthodontist experience, Miss K mentioned that she thinks she’s ready to get work done on her teeth.  Our dentist again tells us about another one here in town.  We schedule an appointment and go…..to be greeted by the nicest staff there was!!  They did x-rays and we talked to the ortho immediatey.  He said that he didn’t think that he didn’t think he could do what we needed.  Luckily, we had an appointment with our dentist very shortly after and we told him.  He said that he’d talk to the ortho because he knew that he could do it.  He was young and have new methods to help her teeth.  Not long after that, the ortho office called us and said that he has agreed to see us, so we scheduled the first appointment.  We were greeted immediately and they even remembered our names (remember, we weren’t patients yet)!!  The orthodontist told us what he planned to do, as long as we understood that her teeth wouldn’t be “perfect”.  We agreed, so financial came in and told us the cost, how much insurance will pay and how much we’re left with.  She explained that the ortho does take monthly payments and that we could pay it off in a year, which was half the treatment time.

We never had an issue with payments, staff, or anything else!!  One time, they accidentally took a double payment out and called to let us know and asked if we wanted a check or some other method to get the money back.  I had a check in 3 days!!  The entire staff was always nice and friendly, answered any questions that I had, and kept us updated.  Now here we are 23 months later and the braces have come off.  Miss K’s teeth are beautiful!!  Forget not being “perfect” because they look great and they’re perfect to us.  He told her that she was a great patient, having never broken a wire or bracket…..and didn’t have “stained” teeth when the braces came off.  That means that she kept them nice and clean!!

So why are we so happy??  It might be shocking when you see what it was as compared to what they are now.  Take a look at the before and after…..

Before & After Braces

Miss K’s teeth were messed up….period.  She’s got the ideal smile now and her smile is just as beautiful as she is.  We got her retainer today and go back in 6 weeks to check it and if there’s any tooth movement.  We’re expecting nothing unusual because she’ll take care of them.  We just can’t thank the orthodontist enough.  He has forever changed Miss K and we’re all so happy and thrilled with the results.

Meet Ralph Elf

We have a new member in our family. Well, our holiday family, that is.  Yesterday, we officially adopted Ralph Elf.  He’s direct relation to all those other helpers to Santa, Elf on a Shelf.

Kiddo and I went shopping yesterday and for a couple years now, we’ve been saying we should get one.  She told me she didn’t get how they could possibly work.  (I just love how she plays along!!)  Finally yesterday, she decided it was time.  Leaving the store, I told her that she gets to name it.  I jokingly said he looks like a “Ralph” and Ralph Elf  was “born” and became ours!!

We went home and promptly filled out all his information and his new family name.  We printed out our adoption certificate so we could keep it close by him.  Miss K read the story to the dogs and they listened with great intent.  I about know what they were thinking…..FINALLY, we won’t be the only spoiled naughty ones in the house!!  We set Ralph on the tv cabinet with some other decorations and said that we hoped he’d be a good boy and just return there each night.

No such luck!!  This is where we found Ralph Elf this morning….

Now this is a definite no-no!!  That decoration is very old and delicate.  But sure enough, there he is enjoying a ride on the reindeer.  SHEESH  The kid in the picture is pretty cute too, isn’t she!?!?  It was a few years ago, but she’s still alright for a teen!!  HAHA

I’ll keep you posted on our newest holiday family member.  Right now, I’m just hoping that he doesn’t find too much trouble or he might get a punishment!!  By the way, if you head over to the Elf on the Shelf site, they have some really fun games that we wasted a fair amount of time playing yesterday afternoon.  HAHA

Down Again

Miss K and I have debated for a long time about changing the day that we weigh in.  It seems like Tuesday is here before we know it and it seems so soon after a weekend.  Today we finally made the change!!

One of the reasons that we want to weigh in on Wednesday is because the only days we don’t work-out are the weekends.  on Tuesday, we’re back on schedule, but sometimes still have weekend weight.  I’ve always weighed less on Wednesday then on Tuesday.  It’s been that way since the surgery.  I always weighed on Tuesday, then my appointments were always on Wednesday.  Each time, I weighed less at the appointment.

I haven’t been keeping accurate tracking for a little while.  We’re having issues with the scale recording the changes from weigh-in to weigh-in.  My record sheet has disappeared and I just haven’t taken the time to find it.  I finally found it and am back on track today!!

With that, I’ve lost another pound.  Yippy!!  That puts me closer to that 50 lbs. mark.  I’m so tired of telling people “almost 5o pounds”.  HAHA  Only 2 more lbs. before I hit a huge mark on the scale too.  I’ve set this goal and thought I’d reach it sooner, but it’s close now.  I feel like once I hit this mark, it’s all downhill!!

On another weight loss note, Miss K lost this week too.  I’m so proud of her!!  She’s working at it hard and I see her putting effort into it.  I know she struggles with this and has done a great job maintaining.  She’s a great kid and I love seeing this sort of spirit in her!!

The Schoolhouse

Not Back to School Blog Hop
Our school room is nothing special.  In fact, it’s our everything room!!

The Schoolhouse is not only our homeschool room, but it’s also our guest room and my office.  The closet also serves as storage for my religion class items that I purchase myself and hubby’s wardrobe.  There’s a futon that our guests sleep on when they come visit.  It also serves as a relaxing spot for reading or other light work.  At each end of the futon are a set of drawers.  Those hold all our craft supplies and many of our paper products.

There’s also 2 desks in there.  And yes, they match!!  There’s one for Miss K and one for me.  We have all our needs in each of our desks.  We have a large armoire that stores all our supplies.  It has all our paper, pens, tape, and lots of other materials.  The the narrowest wall, we have a small bookcase that holds all our school books.  She has one shelf and I have another.  It holds my teacher’s editions and photography books.  Her books, tablets, and binders are there as well.  Above the bookcase is our white board.  On top of the bookcase is all our dry erase markers, erasers, and stuff like that.

Since it’s such a small room, we like to keep it tidy.  We can’t stand it when it gets dirty and cluttered.  There’s just not enough room in there for mess!!

That’s it!!  I’m sorry I don’t have any photos, but things are crazy busy as you all can imagine.  That’s the total sum of our school room.  It’s our little Schoolhouse and we love it!!

I’ve linked this post up to the “NOT Back to School” Blog Hop and can’t wait to check out with other high school homeschoolers have in their rooms!!

Back to School

Today is the day….we head back to HOMEschool!!

I can’t believe how fast summer went by.  More so, I can’t believe my “little” girl is a Freshman this year!!  I can so vividly remember my Freshman year and now it’s my daughter’s turn.  One thing for certain, she’s going to be busy!!  Miss K has a bright future and knows what she wants to do and be.  That means that 9th grade is all about us getting ready for her to do just that.  I have a feeling that it’s going to be a great year!!

When do your kids head back to school or when do you start homeschool??

If we’re starting homeschool, that means that it won’t be long before religious education class starts back up again too!!

Freshman Curriculum

Not Back to School Blog Hop

Much to my dismay, Miss K is already a Freshman this year!!

We’ve always followed a pretty structured curriculum since we started homescooling.  Right from the start kiddo was attracted to BJU Press.  She loved the way it was set-up and I knew without a doubt that I could teach it.  That’s what we’ve stuck with all this time.

So, the majority of our 9th grade curriculum is BJU Press.  This is what we’re doing…..

Writing & Grammar 9

Vocabulary – Level C

Cultural Geography

Physical Science

Fundamentals of Literature

Geometry

For electives, Miss K is doing…..

LifePac Family & Consumer Science (Home Ec.)

Drivers Ed through DriversEd.com

We’re also debating on another elective from LifePac that’ll just be a one semester course.  We’re undecided though and have plenty of time to make that choice.

Kiddo and I also exercise daily for 20-30 minutes.  Then at night, we do the aerobic stepper for 10 minutes.  Gotta keep the fitness up!!

Yes, she’s even old enough to take driver’s ed.  I can’t believe that!!  She start the online portion now and by March, she can get her permit.  In OK, you have to be 15 1/2 to do that and this online course is approved by the state.  Believe it or not though, she’s in no hurry to drive!!  I think it’s funny because I couldn’t wait and most teens just want behind the wheel.

Everything that we do now is all for the future.  We’ve even done some planning for next year.  I keep records with Homeschool Tracker.  I’ve used that from the start and absolutely love the program.  It’s easy to use for me and for kiddo.  Something new that I invested in this year is the 4-Year High School Planner from Home Educating Family.  It’s perfect for us as it goes from 2012-2016.  After reading the reviews and looking at other planners, we thought that this was the one for us.

I also won a lifetime membership to NotebookingPages.com after I signed-up to renew my Treasury Membership.  I was so excited!!  Along with it, I got a lifetime membership to MomsToolbelt.com as well and a gift card to Amazon.com and I just can’t wait to use it all!!  Miss K doesn’t like journals, and I find that notebooks are great alternative and they have them for every subject and a variety of uses.  I got the DriversEd.com on a great deal through Homeschool Buyers Co-Op and it’s a great source for homeschool materials….and deals.

Religious Education is going to be at church again this year.  Miss K will go through Confirmation in May 2013.  It’s such an important event in her life and for our faith.  She’s really excited and is thrilled that her 3rd grade teacher has agreed to be her sponsor.  She’s always wanted it to me Ms. Lori and we’re honored that she accepted.

Well, that’s it for us!!  I know, it’s nothing exciting since we’re pretty traditional and used a structured curriculum.  It’s what works for us though and we’ve really enjoyed it this far.  I think our only change might be in Science next year, but first we’ll see how this year goes!!

I’ve linked this post up to the “NOT Back to School” Blog Hop and can’t wait to check out with other high school homeschoolers will be doing this year!!

London 2012: Day 1

For those that follow my blog or are regular readers, you know that I absolutely love the Olympics.  I’ve been looking forward to this time for months.  I’m all about TEAM USA!!  Being such a fan, I post regular medal counts and often give my opinions of the day’s events.  It doesn’t mean I’ll post them every day or that I won’t have regular posts during this time.  However, I do enjoy them and hope that you like my coverage of the Olympics.

I think the biggest story is probably Michael Phelps not getting a medal today in the 400 IM.  However, we did get a gold medal with Ryan Lochte in the same event.  It was quite exciting!!  No matter, I still think Phelps is going to get at least a couple medals this year.  Our women’s beach volleyball squeaked one through today and move on, as well as the woman’s volleyball taking a win.

Our men’s archery got a bronze today.  I just love watching that.  I did archery often when I was little and loved it even then.  The bows they use for competition is so different than what I used in school though.  The other 3 medals that we got today all came in swimming events.  I watched the ladies 4x and was yelling for them to pull ahead.

Here’s today’s medal count…..

Rank
Country
Gold
Silver
Bronze
Total
1 China 4 0 2 6
2 Italy 2 2 1 5
3 United States 1 2 2 5
4 Brazil 1 1 1 3
4 South Korea 1 1 1 3
6 Japan 0 2 1 3
7 Australia 1 0 0 1
7 Kazakhstan 1 0 0 1
7 Russia 1 0 0 1
10 Colombia 0 1 0 1
10 Netherlands 0 1 0 1
10 Poland 0 1 0 1
10 Romania 0 1 0 1
14 Belgium 0 0 1 1
14 North Korea 0 0 1 1
14 Hungary 0 0 1 1
14 Norway 0 0 1 1
14 Serbia 0 0 1 1
14 Uzbekistan 0 0 1 1

We usually pick an additional country to root for. Kiddo likes Switzerland and Belgium. I’m a fan of Great Britain and Australia.  Who are you rooting for??  What’s your favorite event??

Moving Right Along

Things around here are moving right along.  I really can’t believe how fast summer is going!!

Miss K and I got our hair cut today.  It feels great to have it in shape and more comfortable for the hot weather.  Other than my hair thinning even more, it really looks good.  There’s just really no way to cover the “bald patch” any more.  Not only did I inherit it, but hair loss is a side effect of bariatric surgery.  Big old double whammy for me!!

I lost 0.6 lb today.  Same thing that I lost last week.  I know I’m not gaining, but this is slow!!  I figure as much as I work my butt off with big chores around the house and exercising every day, the weight should be coming off faster.  This plateau is lasting just way too long for ME!!  I think when I go for my appointment in a couple weeks, I’m going to tell the doc to do at least 0.5 cc, if not a full cc.  I haven’t decided yet and some of it will be up to him.  And no, I’m really not eating any more or snacking between meals.  I just think that tightening up the lap-band will help kick the weight loss in gear again.  I just don’t want to take it to the puking stage!!  HAHA  Once for that was enough.

I’ve cleaned out the hall closet.  There’s actually room in there!!  I put our coats and sweaters all on matching hangers and it’s so much more organized that way.  There’s no extra hangers either to get caught on when you’re trying to put something away.  They all take up less room this way too!!  I also have better access to the spare bathroom rugs, the suitcases are in the back out of the way and the vacuum can easily be pulled out and used.  I can’t believe how much I got rid of!!

Last Friday, kiddo and I served the meal after a funeral at church.  It was a great experience and I’d definitely do it again.  I was asked by my DRE if I’d help her out and I usually love stepping up to things like that, so I told her that Miss K and I would do it.  It’s great to be there for a family during that time.

After we were done with that, we took 4 garbage bags of stuff to the church thrift store.  Most of it was my old clothes.  I can’t tell you how good it feels to get rid of all that stuff.  I’ve battled my weight so long, that despite having some thinner moments, I had clothes that were 15-20 years old!!  Yes, they really were that old.  I got rid of stuff that I got at Lane Bryant when we were stationed in GA.  That was the early 1990’s!!  HAHA  I even got rid of some shoes, but they were quickly replaced!!  I’ve gotten some really great shoes lately.  Best of all, they were all on some sort of sale.  Some of them, there was even a sale on the sale.  Now a girl with a shoe thing can’t beat that!!

It’s been so hot outside, that I really haven’t been taking any new photos.  I have plenty to post, but I haven’t even done that.  I guess I really should get back on my photo memes, but I don’t want to get burned out or bore people with them.  I must say though, I can’t wait to meet the local photography group.  I think it’ll be fun and I might learn lots of new stuff!!  Best of all, I might not be so critical of my photos.

Miss K is still working on Algebra I when we’re not busy with appointments and such.  She really is liking it.  I know that’s odd for a kid to like math, but she does.  When she gets started, she flies through several lessons at a time.  She says she’ll be ready for Geometry when the new homeschool year starts.  I just hope that I am!!  HAHA  Oye….high school!!

That’s about it for now.  What’s going on in your world??

Time Off

I know that I haven’t been blogging much lately. I’m just sort of taking a break from it.  I have many things around the house to get caught up on and summer has just really been off to a busy start.

Things around The Schoolhouse are good.  We’re working hard on finishing up Algebra I this summer.  Miss K has to work on several lessons a day so that we can complete it before starting the new school year.  I’m really proud of her though because she’s handling it all with a smile and good spirit.  I actually think she’s enjoying just working on this one class because she can just focus on it and not have to worry about everything else.

My weight loss has hit a plateau and I’m so frustrated.  Today I only lost 0.6 lb. and that’s just not enough to suit me.  I’m not even back down to where I was before I gained all that water weight.  That puts me at 8 lbs. to lose in order to reach my 6 month goal.  At this rate, I’m surely not going to make it.  I know I should just accept it and know that everyone hits a plateau, but I’m not eating much and I’m exercising every day.  I’m doing what I should be and I just feel that with the surgery, I really shouldn’t hit the wall like this.  I just want to keep moving ahead and I feel like I’m dead in my tracks right now.  Frustrating!!

Weekends, we’ve been doing chores around the house.  Every night, we go out and water the trees.  We’re just hoping to get them through this long hot summer.  I can’t believe what that little bit of watering has done to our water bill though.  Crazy!!  It’s worth it though if we can get the roots established to the little baby trees.  Even so, it’s going to take years before they’re really trees.  HAHA  Who knows if we’ll ever really see them at their full potential!!

Tomorrow, we’re just going to grill some burgers and enjoy some family time.  Not much you can do when the holiday is in the middle of the week!!  It’s still going to be a good (hot) day and I know we’ll enjoy it.  Lean Green really is looking forward to having a day off.  He works in this heat, so any break is a welcome relief for him.

Next week, I order our curriculum for the next homeschool year and I’ll start planning for next year’s religious education class.  Time to start doing all the prep work!!  I like having things ready and having an idea of ahead of time for what we’ll be doing and putting stuff aside for it.  For me, I can’t plan far enough ahead!!  HAHA

I think that about covers it all.  I’m still trying to post photos for the memes that I participate in.  I really enjoy sharing my photography.  It’s been so hot though that there’s not much to take pics of!!  I’m hoping to go out to the Refuge soon and see if there’s anything new for me to capture.  I’m also going to keep post my Flashback Friday, although there doesn’t seem to be much interest in other joining in.  I have fun with it though and maybe it I keep at it, it’ll spread!!

What do you have going on??
