Flashback Friday: “The Letter”

As many of my readers know, I haven’t done Flashback Friday in awhile. Well, I’m happy to say that it’s back!!

Flashback Friday 3button 2x2

I have always been a fan of Bette Davis, but while hubby was away (one of the times he was in Iraq), I was up very late and The Letter came on.  The opening scene is Bette firing her gun over and over as a man tumbles down the steps.

TheLetter - BetteDavis - Opening Scene

From that moment on, I was enthralled!!  I couldn’t take my eyes off the tv.

TheLetter Movie Poster

But first, a little about the movie.  The film is in the film-noir, drama, mystery, and crime genres.  The Letter stars Bette Davis (Leslie Crosbie) and Herbert Marshall (Robert Crosbie), along with James Stephenson (Howard Joyce – her lawyer and husband’s friend) and Freida Inescort (Dorthy Joyce).  There’s also several other minor players in this movie.  Some of them are quite shady and eerie!!

TheLetter 1

Gale Sondergaard (Mrs. Hammond)

TheLetter 2

Victor Sen Yung (Ong Chi Seng)

This movie was directed by William Wyler and released by Warner Bros. in 1940.  It was nominated for 7 Oscars at the 1941 Academy Awards in including Bette Davis for Best Actress in Leading Role, Max Steiner for Best Music Original Score, and William Wyler for Best Director.  Other nominations were Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (James Stephenson), Best Cinematography Black-and-White (Tony Gaudio), and Best Film Editing (Warren Low).  The Letter didn’t win any Oscars, but it did win 2 awards at the 1940 New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

Here’s a brief synopsis of The Letter from IMDb….

The wife of a rubber plantation administrator shoots a man to death and claims it was self-defense; a letter in her own hand may prove her undoing.

And here’s one from TCM….

A woman claims to have killed in self-defense, until a blackmailer turns up with incriminating evidence.

One of the most interesting parts of this film is that in the beginning, Leslie (Bette Davis) begins making lace (crocheting).  She’s seen working on it throughout the movie.  The representation of the lace is much like the crime that she committed.  It’s a web of lies and deceit.  It continues to grow.  By the end of the movie, it’s this beautiful lace shawl that Leslie wears to a secret meeting.  It is one of the best figurative objects in film as far as I’m concerned!!

TheLetter - Crochet Lace

TheLetter - BetteDavis - Lace

I highly recommend that you watch this movie.  You won’t be disappointed.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen it and it never gets old….or boring.  The Letter has stood the test of time and is definitely a classic that’s not to be missed!!

Surprise!!

So kiddo and I went out yesterday and did a little shopping and took care of some errands.  When we got home, there was a message on the answering machine from my Dad.  I couldn’t figure out why since I’d just talked to him early in the morning.  So, I call them right away to see what’s up.

surprise

Low and behold, they inform me that they’ve decided to come see us THIS weekend!!  My mom has declared this a little mini-vacation.  She’s determined that she’s not going anyplace or do anything the whole time that she’s here.  YAY!!  I’m so happy and excited.  I love my parents so much and I love it when they do little things like this.  It’s a different schedule than usual though because Mom has to be back to work on Monday instead of them leaving as usual on Monday.  But, they’re also arriving a day earlier than usual!

I’m so looking forward to some special family time.  To top it all off, we’re supposed to have a cool down and possibly get a little much needed rain.  It should make for a wonderful weekend and for some enjoyable time together.  Now, it’s time to plan my menu!!

What do you have going on??  Any surprises in your life??

The Commotion

So I know, you’re wondering just where I’ve been.  Well, I’ve not been sitting idle, that’s for sure!!

Kiddo has taken a “break” from her volunteering at the animal shelter.  The schedule of working with Doc has changed and it just doesn’t work with us homeschooling through summer.  We’re enjoying having a little more time on our hands though.  Then again, it’s not in our hands….it’s spent in the books!!

Homeschool is going well.  So far summer has mostly been spent on Geometry.  We also have some science labs planned, but we’ll handle those after Miss K’s last summer visit to see my parents.  She’s also working on Latin, but I’m just not much help.  I know teaching her, I should be, but I never liked foreign language.  All’s not lost though because my Dad happens to be great at Latin, so she gets a lot of work in then!!

My weight has been stable for going on 2 years now.  I’m still walking when I can.  It should be more often, but it is what it is.  At least I’m getting some activity in!!  I’m very happy with where I’m at and I know those final 10 pounds will come when it’s time.  The one thing that I haven’t done much of is photography and I’m really looking forward to getting behind the camera again.  I miss it and just haven’t taken as many opportunities as I should to get photos.

I’m happy to say that my shops are doing alright.  I’m trying to keep them stocked with new printables.  Don’t forget if you’re in need of educational or Christian printables, be sure to check out my stores (the buttons are in the left-hand column)!!

So what else can I tell you!?!?  Other than that, life is just busy.  We’re always doing something and trying not to let things slip through the schedule.  Unfortunately, my blog does seem to suffer a bit.  It always picks up once school starts, and that’s just not far off any more.  RE is just around the corner.  Can you believe it’s July already??  I’m thrilled though because the heat is on!!

How’s your summer been??  What have you been up to??

Calling All D3 Secret Agents!!

First, I have to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed my little break from blogging.  I accomplished a lot and feel really good about everything that I’ve done.  This set of materials for VBS is no exception and I’m very proud of how it turned out.  I hope all of you are as well and will be using it this summer….or in the future!!

AgencyD3_Logo-4color

This year, I made 10 different things to go with the “Agency D3” them for LifeWay’s VBS this year.  They’re all secret agent related….and I think quite fun!!  Any printable that has the Bible verse use is the NIV (New International Version).  If you need a different version, please contact me and I’ll see if I can change it (no promises though).

AgencyD3 byElaine SAMPLE

Clipart © LifeWay and is used with permission.  Some clipart from the internet is believed to be public domain and is used for educational purposes and without profit.

Here’s a list of this years materials and suggested uses….

1.  Scanner Handprint Craft – Use paint or stamp pad to put each child’s handprint on this scanner.  It includes the Bible verse and is a fun simple craft.

2.  Agent D3 Badge – Fold where indicated and let the kids have fun with this secret agent ID badge.

3.  Secret Agent Card – You can place each child’s photo on the card or leave the “secret agent” image.  Print the daily symbols on sticker paper and place on the card each day the child is in VBS.  Plain paper could be used as well and then glued on each day or at the completion of VBS.

4.  Evidence Tag – Students can note what they learned (evidence) or it has many other uses as well.

3.  Evidence Report – Child can fill this out after each lesson/activity for what they learned.  An area at the bottom for the teacher/parent/counselor to fill out for “grading”.  This also has many other uses.

6.  Fingerprint Card – Use paint or ink and place each students fingerprints on this card.  They can then look at them under a magnifying glass to see how each one is different (God made us special and unique).  There’s other uses as well.

7.  Entrance Sign – Place this on the wall/door for kids to “scan to enter” their hand each day as they arrive or to enter each activity/room as they enter (if they move around during the day).

8.  Secret Agent Pass – Use these for students as they move from room to room or activity to activity.  Can also be used a snack/lunch pass, bathroom pass, and so on.

9.  Secret Agent Notepad (blank pages) – This comes with a “leather” cover and blank lined pages to take notes, copy Bible verse, draw, or many other things.  The lines are different types and sizes to use to suit the needs of the ages/grades of kids.  Also, there’s one blank page for drawing.

10.  Secret Agent Notepad (activities) – This comes with a “sleuth” cover.  All the pages inside have a variety of activities including a word search, daily maze, Bible verse games, and more.  There’s also a couple blank pages and note pages.

AgencyD3 SecretAgent Notepad byElaine SAMPLE

The covers for the notepads can be used for whichever notepad you want.  I just wanted to put one cover per notepad.  Also, the pages in the notepads can be combined and used as wanted or needed.  You might want the leather cover with 3 lined pages and 1 activity or 4 activities and 1 lined page.  Just fold the pages and staple for a complete notepad of your choice!!

To download any of these printable activities, just click the link in the title or description of each item.  I hope that you can use them and that the kids get tons of enjoyment from them.  Please share some photos of your children with the activities and I love your comments, so leave one on this post or use the “contact” button in the right hand column….thanks!!

Vacation Bible School

I’ve been making VBS (Vacation Bible Schools) printables for the past several years.  I do it especially for a lady that’s in one of my Y!Groups.  I think I’ve only missed one year, and I just go too busy and ran out of time.   I believe that was last year for 2013.  I’m once again working on stuff for this year!!

vbs-children

This is a list of all the posts that I’ve done for my VBS printables.  They’re all related to LifeWay VBS themes.  Here are all the VBS posts….

I’m also working on the Agency D3 theme for this year.  I’m hoping to have them uploaded and posted very soon.  I’m happy with how they’ve come so far and can’t wait to make them available to my group member….and all of you, my readers.

If you use any of these printables, please leave a comment or use the “contact” button in the right hand column of this blog.  I love to hear from those that use my materials and find out how they are used in class!!

I’m in Business!!

As many of you know, I’ve been considering opening a store to sell my printables in. This isn’t an easy decision for me. I had to put a lot of thought and prayer into it. I wanted to do what’s right for my friends, followers, and readers. I also have to do what’s best for my family.

My ultimate decision is to open a store to sell my printable materials in. I’ve opened an Etsy shop, and also a shop on Teachers Notebook.

I want to assure you that I’ll continue to post freebies on my blog and Facebook. I’m not trying to get rich, but merely help add some income to my family. Giving and sharing my printables is just what comes naturally to me. It’s what I truly love to do and will continue to do.

I hope that all of you will keep following me on this blog and on Facebook. It’s also my hope that you’ll check out my stops. I’ve tried to keep my prices down, so hopefully you’ll find something that you can use. I’d also appreciate it if you’d spread the word to anyone that you know that might be looking for educational or Christian printables for home or school.

Please check out my stores and be sure to follow them so you know when I upload new products, have sales, and so on!!  You’ll also be able to access the shops at any time by clicking the buttons in my right hand column.

Remember, I fully plan on keeping this blog going.  I’ll be posting freebies here as often as I can.  I’m not on a schedule as it is, but they’ll be posted as often as possible.  One of the only changes will be that some of the freebies I post will be available for a limited amount of time, but very few of them.  Also, some of my older ones will be expired so that I can move them into my shops.  But please know this will only be a few of them and all the rest will continue as usual!!

Coloring Through Holy Week

This is the rest of my Easter lesson.  Before I get into that, I have to tell you, my write-the-room activity was a huge hit with the kids!!  Each of us (hubby, kiddo, and me) each took 3 kids and walked around to each “station”.  We read the little scrip to them about how it was part of Holy Week, the kids then traced the word on their worksheet.  After that, they went to their seats and colored the pictures.

When we were done with that, they worked on a coloring book that I made for Holy Week.  There are pictures for the different events of Holy Week, what day it occurred, and a brief description.  The kids had fun with this as well.  They didn’t get it completed, but it’s definitely something that they can take home to finish and have their families read to them.

Here’s a sample of a couple pages….

Clipart is hand-drawn by my husband © Elaine and © The Schoolhouse.  I can’t tell you how proud of him that I am, especially since I know it’s hard for him to “believe” that he has such an amazing talent.

While the kids were coloring, my daughter read The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale.  I consider it to be one of the best stories there are.  I actually was introduced to this book several years ago by another catechist who read it to the whole RE program in church.

In addition, I made little Easter gift boxes for class.  Each one had a couple different small toys in it, one being a slap bracelet that had “hope”, “peace”, and “faith” on them that I picked up at Wal-Mart.  The main thing in the box was a plastic egg with one of each color jelly bean in it.  With that was the Jelly Bean Prayer that I sort of put together myself.  I used a combination of 3 different poems/prayers and made them into one that I really liked.  If you’re interested in the Jelly Bean Prayer cards, you can click here to download it.

That’s all for this year’s Easter lesson!!  What are you doing??

Easter Write-the-Room

I’ve been working hard on activities for class this week. I like for my kids to have fun and understand the importance of Easter at the same time.  I’ll be doing a couple different posts of what we’ll be doing with the littles this week.

This first activity is a writing one.  In fact, it’s a write-the-room.

My plan is to put the signs around the gym.  Then we’ll each take 2-3 kids and walk around telling them what each symbol on the card is.  The kids will then trace that word on the page.  After we go to each “station”, they’ll go back to their desks and color the pictures.  Note, this is for little ones that can’t write (only trace) yet.

Here’s a sample of each page….

I also typed up a script that we’ll use at each “station” to describe the picture and symbol.  If you’re interested in those definition, just click here.  You can use it as is, or put it into your own words.

Come back again soon because I’ll be posting more for this week’s lesson!!

I’m 6 Years Old!!

Alright, so it’s not me….it’s the blog!!

Commotion is 6 years old today.  I can’t believe that!!  Time has gone so fast.

I know that I blog a lot less than I used to, but I still enjoy it.  I feel like I’ve finally taken ownership of it made this blog all mine.  That means that I had to give up on the idea of having lots of followers and readers, but it was a sacrafice worth making.  It allows me to blog about whatever I want and not just stick to one single topic.

Normally, I’d give you a bunch of stats from the past year.  I can’t do that this year, as I moved the blog to a hosted domain.  My stats only count from that point on.  That is by far, the biggest event on the blog in the past year.  The move was a lot of work, but it was well worth it.  I’m still working on moving files and making sure that links work.  In addition to that, I still get plenty of visitors on the old blog looking for my printables.  Despite signs and notes that I moved, they haven’t found there way to this new location yet.  I have hopes though!!

What has your year been like??  What do you like or dislike about the “new” blog??  What do you want to see more of….or even less of??  Let me know your thoughts on Commotion, as I always love to hear from my readers!!
