Relief

Posted by on 15 May 2012

I must say, it’s only a day after my unscheduled doc/surgeon visit, and I’m already feeling better!!  I have been puking for about 3 weeks now.  Basically, since my fill in April.  It’s been terrible and right now, I’m surprised I held off going to the doc for so long.

At first, I thought it was just from the fill and that I needed liquids and that my swelling was going down slower than usual.  After a fill, you’re supposed to go back on liquids for day or w and then puree or mush for a couple days.  Working back into foods.  This is supposed to give you time to heal after a fill and let any swelling go down.  So when I’d puke, I’d just go back to liquids.

Then the stomach virus hit my house.  For a week, I thought that was what was making me puke so much.  During this second week though, I would get something down here or there.  The 3rd week was the worst.  Some days, even liquids were coming back up.  I was starting to get tired.  I hadn’t felt tired since before my surgery.  So yesterday, I just walked into the doc/surgeon office and told them I was vomiting and needed to be seen.  They saw me right away!!

I have to tell you that some of my apprehension about going to the doc was because I knew I was getting a new one.  My doc left after my appointment last month.  He’s moved on, as all military docs do.  So I was nervous….even scared….to go to a new doc.  Granted, the one I had often drove me nuts, but I knew what to expect from him.  After meeting my new doc yesterday, I regret postponing, but that part of it’s over now.

Anyway, he was disappointed I waited and then got onto a discussion with me.  He listened to everything that I said.  I decided he’d either take .5 cc or 1 cc out since 1 cc was injected on my last visit.  The choice was mine.  MINE!?!?  I love that!!  I opted for the whole cc because I wasn’t having any issues before that went in.  He gladly removed it and then sat down to talk with me.  He stated that he very clearly wouldn’t have given me a fill the last time since I was still losing weight.  He’s not about how much I lose, just that I lose.  Now that’s a big change from the previous doc!!  He said losing weight slow is fine, as long as it’s steady.  Yep, BIG CHANGE there!!  He was shocked that I’ve lost 10 lbs. since my fill and thought that was way too much for lap band patient.  We discussed several other things.  I now have a better understanding of what to expect, what to do or not do, and information that I needed.

For example, when I was reading the lap band message boards about my vomiting, everyone on the board knew their lap band size and exactly how much fluid was in it.  Most have had their bands longer, so knew what their “sweet spot” was.  Thanks to my new doc, I now know that I have a Standard AP and that I’m at 3 cc fill.  He also said that despite the fact that many…..actually most….patients get to double that, there are patients that consistently lose weight with less and I just MIGHT be one of those.  Time will tell and he wants to go in smaller amounts with me since I reacted so badly to a full cc last time.  He explained how it should get harder for me to eat, but with proper small bite size and adequate amount of chewing, I should NOT puke after just 2 bites of anything.  He also doesn’t care if I have a tiny bit of mashed potatoes or something like that.  He understands the need and want for variety.  His main concern is to get the protein first.  That’s another huge change because my other doc was like NO carbs, starches, or anything like that.  This one says, it’s alright in MODERATION (another words, a tiny bite) and be sure to work it off and stay on the protein.

It really was a good visit.  I learned a lot.  I must say though, the message boards/forum and web site are amazing too.  I recommend anyone having the surgery look into them.  It’s amazing what information and help is out there!!  I’m already feeling better just having some liquids with flavor and some chicken noodle soup.  And amazingly, it all stayed down!!  I go back next week and he might put .5 cc in, depending on how I feel.  This week, probably because I actually had something stay down last night….I only lost .2 lb. this week.  That’s alright after my huge loss the previous couple of weeks.  Miss K on the other hand lost 2.2 lbs. this week.  Some of that I’m sure was worry over me, but it’s all good now and she’s doing so great.  I’m so very proud of her!!

Ah life, it’s ever changing and such a learning process!!
