As many of you may know, my religion class this year is almost all boys. There’s 9 boys and 4 girls (if they all show up for class.) This is a first for me, so I’ve had to change my whole teaching strategy. These boys always have to be doing something and entertained for the whole class. Coloring and writing isn’t enough!! I’ve always engaged the kids in games and activities, but it has to be non-stop this year.
Tonight’s lesson was about church and mass. We started class by reviewing previous week’s lessons and then moved onto our new lesson. We went over our church family. Then, we discussed items and people inside the church. I showed them lots of pictures of things that they’d see in the church and during mass. I gave them a worksheet here to see how much they remembered about what we’d just discussed. I must say that they did very well. Also, the cards that I used to show the items are very similar to the ones on this same page, but they’re ones that I made quite some time ago.
We moved onto our craft of the matching pieces church. This took up over 30 minutes alone by the time they cut all the pieces out. Then they came over to Mr H or me and we supervised the glue!! The faint lines didn’t show up on the church when I copied them, which was good. The students got to arrange things a little more to their choosing, although almost everyone was the same as the project indicated. They’re so proud that next week, their churches will be displayed on the hall wall in the main school building!! On a side note, if you haven’t checked out MSSS Crafts and Resources for Bible Stories site, I suggest you do. They have tons of great stuff!!
We worked right up until the end of class and finished with prayer. We’re starting on the Hail Mary, but a couple already know it, which is impressive. They all left with this as homework and telling their parents all about their churches!!
