Pumpkin Prayer

Halloween can present may problems and issues for many Christians.  Every year, there is the debate on whether to celebrate it or not.  For me, I like to teach my religion class to find the good points to it.  Halloween only needs to be as scary and “demonic” as people want it to be.

Liz Curtis Higgs has a great book called The Pumpkin Patch Parable.  You can read about it by clicking the book cover below.

I used the basis of this book to create the craft that we did in religion class tonight.  The kids all colored in their pumpkin patches and the pattern pieces.  Then, they cut out all the pattern pieces.  As we read the poem together, the kids assembled their pumpkin patches.

Here’s a thumbnail view of what’s included in this craft project…..

My class had so much fun with this!!  This was a fairly simple craft for us to do with restricted time.  They love the coloring (we used markers).  And, they enjoy anything they get to cut and glue!!  They were all showing their parents as they got picked up, so I know it was a success for my little ones.

If you’d like to download this freebie, just….

So, Shine with the light of Jesus and enjoy the project….and Halloween!!  I always appreciate any comments or suggestions that you leave. It helps me to know that what I created is used or what I do is like or not liked. Also, please click the button below to vote for my blog….thanks!!

Family Workout

The family here at Commotion has a brand new routine!!  Every evening (except for Wednesday when we have religious education), Lean Green comes home from work, lets the dogs out, and then he changes clothes.  We then begin a family workout!!

We’ve been exercising about 15-20 minutes each evening.  We expect this time to increase as we get more used to our routine.  Heck, even the dogs have been getting in on it!!  When we’re done, we all do our part to cook dinner and have it on the table by a decent time so that the workout doesn’t go to waste by sitting the rest of the night.

So far it’s working out well.  Granted we’re only in our first week, but we’re all enjoying the time together.  We’re really liking feeling better!!  Miss K was really sore that first day and we had a good laugh about that considering how much younger she is than than us.  She’s just taking it all in stride!!

Miss K and I are really working on our lower bellies.  I never got rid of the baby pouch, even after all these years and she takes after Momma!!  The routine that her and I use is from here, which I found on Pinterest.  If that doesn’t work, you can see it here.  While we’re doing that, hubby runs in place or does some of his Army exercises.

I’m still on the waiting list for the lap band, but there’s been no word in ages.  I’m going to call again this week.  At this rate though, I won’t need the surgery!!  HAHA

So what does your family do for fitness??  Do you take any time to work out together or alone??  Have you ever considered doing it??  I’d love to know what you all do, if anything at all.  Goodness knows that even though we’re fairly busy, we’ve never done anything like this until now.  I think we’ll all benefit in the long run though.

Sequence & Pray – Hail Mary

I haven’t made anything new for my religion class in quite awhile.  I’ve been using what I have or searching out new things.  However, we’re learning the Hail Mary right now and I wanted something versatile for them.  That prompted me to create this “sequence and pray”.

There are 7 cards with the words to the Hail Mary on them.  If 2 copies of the cards are printed, one could use them to play concentration.  I also created a board to go with where the cards should be placed in sequence order. (Print the board on LEGAL size paper!!)  There’s so many uses for the cards because they could just be used to recite the prayer as well.

Here’s a thumbnail view of what’s included in this “sequence and pray”…..

Pinterest

So for a couple months now, I’ve really been seeing alot of people in the Y!Groups talking about Pinterest.  I thought that for sure this was just another fad.  Goodness knows, since I’ve been online or even blogging, there’s been enough of those.  They never seem to stick around for long and then I’m stuck in them.  I always wonder why in the world I joined or got sucked in!!

Now there’s Pinterest.  What is this pinning??  Why would I want to do this and why would people care what I pin??  I just had to check it out.  Well, this is probably going to be a case of curiosity killed the cat because I joined.  It just looked so interesting and I thought it was a great spot to “pin” all the things that I love.  Even if I don’t use them for myself, it might help others.

I even went so far as to create a “board” for Lean Green and Miss K.  Yes, they have to “pin’ under my name, but they get to pin too!!  Now doesn’t that sound fun and interesting??  HAHA  We’re going to make family “boards” and “pins” and do it in Commotion style!!

Now you’re probably asking what is Pinterest??  I know you joined, but what the heck is it??  Well, I probably couldn’t explain it very well, so I’m going to quote right from the site….

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

You can only join Pinterest by invite, so if you’re interested, just let me know!!  I’d be more than happy to send you an invite and get you addicted to pinning and viewing other pinboards.  Let me just tell you, there’s a little bit of everything on Pinterest!!

If you’d like to check out my Pinterest, just click the button…..

Follow Me on Pinterest

You can follow me and I’ll follow you and we’ll just fill up our “boards” with all kinds of “pins”!!

The Weekend

Time just seems to be escaping me lately.  With so much going on in homeschool this year for lessons, birthdays, doctor visits, and many other things, I’m just falling behind.  My poor blog seems to be suffering the most.  I apologize for not being around much.  Even this weekend, there’s plenty for us to do.

I should have put my call into the surgeon last week, but there was so many things with the party that I decided to wait.  I didn’t want to get caught up in appointments when I already had that going on.  I also need to schedule my regular 6 month appointment with my doc (diabetes and meds), plus I’m almost 2 months behind scheduling my eye exam.  Because of the diabetes, I’m supposed to have my diabetic eye exam every year.  This is aside from the regular eye exam which we don’t do this year because insurance doesn’t pay for it but every other year.

Rain has moved in, but allergies are bad.  Poor kiddo is just miserable.  It’s a combination of such a long hot dry summer and whatever this weather is bringing with it.  You can smell it in the air though.  Even hubby is sneezing and congested.  I keep checking with the post hospital/clinic to see if flu shots are being done yet.  So far, no word!!

Because of the birthday and everything going on, I haven’t lost any more weight.  I’m holding at a loss of 10 pounds.  That’s good though!!  I’d still like to lose more and hopefully as things calm down again I will.  I’m feeling good!!  I just wish that I could go to bed earlier and sleep.  I can go to bed, but I generally just lay there….and then I start to think.

I’m trying to create new things for my group and also post on my other blog (The Schoolhouse) as often as possible.  I’m just barely keeping my head above the water with that one!!  HAHA  Also, I don’t want to neglect this blog too much.  With having an almost all boy class this year, I’m hoping to share more of the activities that I’m doing with them.  I’m not using the all the same books and I’m moving away from coloring.  Not that we do too much coloring before, I’ve just really expanded on it and trying to let them use more things.  They seem to be enjoying it and I’m hoping to be able to share most of it here!!

In addition to all that, I’m really missing taking new photos.  The things that we’ve been doing and the places we’ve been going don’t really require bringing a camera along.  I can’t say I’ve missed any shots by not having it with me either.  Maybe a couple sunsets, but that’s about all.  With everything so dead from the summer heat, there’s just not many pretty plants and animals are out of sight looking for food.  I’d love to get back to doing some memes and posting some photos again….and even a couple photo memes!!

Oh, and how about them Packers!?!?  Going for a 5-0 start to the season tomorrow.  We even get to watch it!!  I can’t wait.  It should be a good day as we go racing in Kansas first.  Hoping that Dale Jr finally gets his first win this season.  If not, Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon have to bring the in for Hendrick Motor Sports.  Then in the evening, the big game for the Pack against the dirty birds of Atlanta.  Yeah, I’ll be a tv (sports) watching girl tomorrow and kiddo will be at my side!!

Well, that’s it for now.  I’m out!!

Church and Mass With the Boys

As many of you may know, my religion class this year is almost all boys. There’s 9 boys and 4 girls (if they all show up for class.)  This is a first for me, so I’ve had to change my whole teaching strategy.  These boys always have to be doing something and entertained for the whole class.  Coloring and writing isn’t enough!!  I’ve always engaged the kids in games and activities, but it has to be non-stop this year.

Tonight’s lesson was about church and mass.  We started class by reviewing previous week’s lessons and then moved onto our new lesson.  We went over our church family.  Then, we discussed items and people inside the church.  I showed them lots of pictures of things that they’d see in the church and during mass.  I gave them a worksheet here  to see how much they remembered about what we’d just discussed.  I must say that they did very well.  Also, the cards that I used to show the items are very similar to the ones on this same page, but they’re ones that I made quite some time ago.

We moved onto our craft of the matching pieces church.  This took up over 30 minutes alone by the time they cut all the pieces out.  Then they came over to Mr H or me and we supervised the glue!!  The faint lines didn’t show up on the church when I copied them, which was good.  The students got to arrange things a little more to their choosing, although almost everyone was the same as the project indicated.  They’re so proud that next week, their churches will be displayed on the hall wall in the main school building!!  On a side note, if you haven’t checked out MSSS Crafts and Resources for Bible Stories site, I suggest you do.  They have tons of great stuff!!

We worked right up until the end of class and finished with prayer.  We’re starting on the Hail Mary, but a couple already know it, which is impressive.  They all left with this as homework and telling their parents all about their churches!!

How’s your religion classes going so far this school year??  What are you working on??  Please leave a comment and if you enjoyed this post, please click the button below my signature to vote for my blog….thanks!!

Dirt Track Racing

We ended the birthday party event in a special way for Miss K last night.  We took her to the local dirt track to watch some championship racing.  It was just so much fun and the weather was perfect!!

We left about the time the gates open.  We remembered from a previous trip many years earlier, that they fill up pretty fast.  We paid our extra $1 so that we could sit in the actual seats instead of on bleachers.  As we waited, we watched the trailers getting to the track and setting up the cars.  The temps cooled off as the sun went down.  We had to give mom and dad coats of ours because we knew it’d be damp and chilly.  Good thing because it was the perfect night for dirt track racing!!

It started with trials in the different classes.  I couldn’t pick a winner to save my soul!!  Finally the last couple races, I had a couple that finished well.  At the half way point, all the guys that qualified the night prior came out and drew numbers for starting positions.  Then the big races started!!

By the time, the track was drying out and they were really sliding around the corners.  The dust would just hang in the air.  There was some really great battles.  There was races and they’d go quick.  The trials were 10 laps, but all the championship racing was at least 25 laps.  The little sprint cars were the fastest!!  We all thought that they’d wreck more, but they didn’t.  They just lapped and lapped.

The whole night, the guy on the flag stand was being questioned.  He really didn’t throw the caution as much as he should have.  He endangered some of those drivers.  They’re stalled out in the corners with cars coming right at them and dodging them.  Had all of us on our feet at times to see who was or wasn’t going to make it through.

Now, as I sit here recalling the fun from last night, I’m watching the big boys race around the track at Dover.  Oh how we all love some good racing….no matter how many days in a row or the type!!

The Party

Today was the day of Miss K’s birthday party.  It was small as expected this year, but it was good.  The people that matter the most and love her were all here.  It also made for a slower relaxing day for all of us.  I didn’t have to constantly be on the go and keep food full.

Her best friend was here.  They played and laughed all day long!!  My 3 goddaughters were also here and they just adore Miss K.  My parents were here and with a smaller crowd, they spent more time with her.  The food was great as “mother” put together some awesome Mexican food for us.  There was tomales, flautas, spanish rice and beans.  Of course, there was a fruit tray and veggie tray too.  There was plenty to accompany the food too!!  We finished it all off with a huge marble cake.

She got pretty much everything that she asked for this year along with some monkey gifts.  That’s already in an envelope and ready to deposit.  She kept very little for herself.  Miss K knows she needs the funds for her future!!

I know this is short, but the party was small and we just all enjoyed the day.  Now, we’re on our way to the second half of her party day.  That means more to come later!!
