Parish Fall Carnival

Posted by on 3 October 2009

Today was the day our annual parish Fall Carnival.  It was an absolutely beautiful day for it!!  Miss K had Sam with her because they’re having a sleepover.  I was scheduled to open the baked goods booth.  Then I had time to stroll the Carnival before hubby and I had to pull duty on the moon bounce.

Don’t get me wrong, I love pulling my duties and volunteering, but I dislike the moon bounce.  For one, it’s always in the sun.  I can’t take that kind of heat and there’s no place to hide from the sun.  I’m just miserable out there.  Luckily, I have the Man to help out.  He’s a trooper!!  The main reason is the behavior of the kids.  Every year there’s “bad” ones.  Worst of all, the parents do nothing to help curb it.  This year, it’s a big boy wrestling younger ones down.  His parents are no place around and he did the same thing last year.  We tell the kids not to take toys in and they do it anyway.  This year it was inflatable sword looking things.  Whacking each other and if we tell them stop, the parents say “they’re just having fun”.  Yeah ok, til someone loses an eye!!

Of course, it’s not all bad.  You get to see the kids have a great time and that usually overrules anything else that happens.  The fun extends to K.  She has a good time each year we go.  This year, her and Sam had a blast!!  I wanted to do the cake walk and darned if Sam didn’t win both times!!  Yes, that child took home 2 cakes!!  They both ate way too much and so did I.  The DRE’s mom makes tomales to die for and I get them every year!!

We did hear the bad news that we might not have a parish Fall Carnival next year.  Every year, it’s getting harder and harder to find volunteers.  Since we have a school joined with our church, they participate too.  However, even they couldn’t find volunteers.  It’s no wonder the way the HSA is run, but that’s another story.  If I was setting this up, I’d change a few things.  First, this year it was advertised as the school’s carnival on a big sign by the church.  Well most people aren’t going to support a private school by attending at Carnival.  Second, even parishners aren’t going to go if it’s billed as the school’s.  That means that’s where the money goes and they want it to go to the church.  That’s especially true if you have issues with the school like we do!!  (I have to add though that the new principal is doing a good job and seems like a good man.)  Next, I’d change the booths.  They’ve been the same since we started doing this.  We’ve volunteered for 4 years and attended quite a bit longer.  Change things up and make it fun and interesting again!!  Bring some life to it and make the people want to be there.

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents on it!!  HAHA  No matter, we had a great time and we’ll be there if and when another is held.  Do you have a parish Fall Carnival or anything similar??

I love Parish festivals. Ours is coming up in a couple of weeks.

The local parish has one every year. The whole town flocks to it. That’s one reason why I don’t go. LOL I did it a few times. But then I boycotted it when they decided to advertise a beer tent. As if the volume of people isn’t enough to deal with, you would now have to deal with drunk ones! And this, at a carnival for kids! Pissed me off! LOL They have never advertised the beer tent again. Have a feeling people complained as the flyers were distributed THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
