It’s Arrived!!

I told you all in a blog post a couple weeks ago that I’d sent for a “China Learning Kit”.  It arrived today!!  It was so fun opening it.  Miss K too each item out one at a time and had to look at it all.  It had every item in it that it was supposed to.  Here’s a couple pictures from our opening experience….

The Envelope - with postage and writing

I’d recommend ordering this kit.  It has several little trinkets in it that will really get the kid learning about a unit on China.  These are just a couple pictures of the items in the kit.  There’s other stuff, but I couldn’t very well include a picture of everything….especially since K decided to do it ONE item at a time!!  If you haven’t already checked it out, you can order it here….

 China Learning Kit

We’ll be having fun with this kit in the future as we learn more about China.  It’s a country with a long history and we’ll be learning all about it!!

Late Night / Early Morning Bonus

Here’s a little math puzzle game I made called Watermelon Bears Count and Match 1-25.  Players will count the number of watermelon slices on each piece.  They will then match it to the numeral on the watermelon bear piece.  The player can then put them in numerical order from 1 to 25.

Hope the kiddos enjoy!!

EDIT:  If you’ve already downloaded this, you’ll want to click the link again.   I’ve added a mini-folder to store the pieces in.  If you haven’t already downloaded it….what are you waiting for??  HAHA

What’s Up With That?

Alright, I could have sworn that I blogged last night.  I can’t be totally losing my mind!!

So yesterday was race day.  It was an awesome race in Loudon, NH.  It’s like a short track, but it’s actually a mile track….which isn’t short.  Just when I start having tolerance toward Kurt Busch, he races dirty yesterday.  He was all up in Jeff on the restarts.  Then he went after Jimmie.  They tried to say it wasn’t on purpose, but if you watch his tires, he was turning into him and it put him back on the track.  Then there’s the other Busch, who I’ll NEVER have any tolerance for.  He caused a major wreck because once again he’s trying to tread the needle.  Everyone checks up but him and BAM!!  Can we say JERK!?!?  Then a stupid Toyota wins it again because of rain.  Give me a break!!  I’m so tired of rain ending the races this year.  All I can say is God was with us when we went to Texas.  It was cool, but there was NO rain!!

On a good note, Jr. had a car he could drive!!  He’s got communication with his new crew chief.  He’s got a crew chief that knows what he’s doing.  And, Jr. is actually driving again.  I love it!!  At one point, he was up in the front (not a race leader though) and looked like he could finish in the Top 10.  Alas, pits had to be taken….then the rain.  He never made it back up, but he sure looked darn good!!

Miss K’s room is done.  It looks amazing.  It’s much more grown up now.  The color is so her and she’s really put things where they belonged and got rid of a few things.  A few is a start!!

Today was an odd day around here.  We just didn’t get much accomplished and I don’t think we tried that hard.  I guess you could call it a “lazy day”.  I even took a nap today!!  I can’t watch tv because I’m so tired of hearing about Michael Jackson.  Yes, he was good (maybe even great) at one time.  Something went wrong with him and he’s never been the same.  He’s definitely NOT an idol or hero.  We have some of his music….the old stuff.  It’s good, there’s no doubt.  But let it go for pity sakes.  There’s REAL news out there happening.

Then, Billie Mays dies.  That was another strange one.  They said it was heart disease and not the hit to the head.  Still seems strange to me that he and his wife didn’t know he had heart disease.  Yet, he’s hit on the head and “off” because of it and that wasn’t a factor in the death.  Yeah OK!!  How much did the airline pay for that to be covered up??  Maybe it was heart disease….maybe it wasn’t.  Still strange!!

It all leads back to my title today….

What’s up with all that??

Painting

We spent the entire day painting today.  We started when we got up and didn’t finish until dinner time.  That was just ONE room!!  It was a bit more of a challenge because we’d paint on one coat and then let it dry.  Then we’d paint the second coat and let it dry.  It couldn’t even be tacky because we’d have to move furniture up to the wall that was just painted.  There was just no way to remove all the furniture from that room.

It looks awesome though.  I believe the walls are called “peach butter” and the ceiling will be “almond butter”.  The ceiling will actually be a little darker than the walls.  I can’t even remember the name of the paint color for the trim.  That’s lighter than the walls though.  Tomorrow, we have a small section behind the bookcase to paint and the trim.  The ceiling won’t be done until the end of summer.  We have to move the ceiling fan first and repair the hole.  That’s not a project for right now.

The room screams “MISS K” now though!!  It’s bright and cheerful.  And, it’s definitely a sign of how she’s maturing.  < sigh >  She seems really happy with it and we’re convincing her that it’s time to let go of some of her toys that she hasn’t played with in awhile.  She feels guilty for getting rid of them and that’s something we can relate to.  Unfortunately, it leads to mess and we don’t want that for her.  Somehow, it seems as if she’s ended up with more room.  It also appears to have areas of the room.  Part of the room is like a play area and the other part is like the living area with her bed and clothes.  It’s pretty cool!!

Alright, this tired old lady is out of here!!  It’s been a LONG day and I’m feeling it!!

Mini-Books

I’ve uploaded 2 new creations to my 4Shared account.  One of them is a counting mini-book called “Farmer, Farmer…What Do You See?”.  It has lots of cute farm animals in it and is for counting to 5.  The other one is called “Five Little Frogs” and is a rhyme mini-book.  It’ll get the readers hopping!!  You can find both of these on the Homeschool Printables and Educational File Folder Games page.  The link to that page is in the right column under “pages”.  Both books will be found under READING on that page.

I hope you, my readers, can use these.  May the little ones enjoy!!

Weird

When I’d heard today that Farrah Fawcett died today, I wasn’t that surprised.  She’d had a long hard battle with anal cancer.  She handled it like nobody I’d ever known.  She finally agreed to marry Ryan O’ Neal after all their years together.  Farrah believed that one day she’d get that miracle.  She never did get her miracle, except to say that she’s in a better place now.  There is no pain any more.  There is finally peace.

Then later, we’re going to eat dinner and as kiddo turns her radio down, I heard that Michael Jackson had a heart attack and was in the hospital.  Hubby had to go out for something and heard on the car radio that he really was dead, not just in the hospital.  I didn’t believe him.  There’s no way Michael went that way.  But sure enough, the tv news is plastered with the story….Michael Jackson is gone.  His exact cause of death is still unknown.

Later, I started thinking what a tragic day this was.  And what a weird day.  There was 2 huge lives lost today.  Then I started feeling bad for Farrah Fawcett.  This woman had battled cancer and truly was an inspiration for many.  But her story has been put in the back burner, only to be overtaken by the news that Michael Jackson died.  Yes, he had an awesome career.  “Thriller” is an amazing album.  However, he basically turned into a freak.  He had all those surgeries and nobody could even recognize him.  He had the court battles and battles over his actions with kids.  Michael was basically a recluse the past few years.  Yet the story of his death has taken priority over that of Farrah.  Somehow that doesn’t seem just or fair.  She didn’t even get the day that she died to herself.  The one who hid from life and who he was is better or more important than the woman who fought for life??

I don’t don’t know and I can’t judge.  Each of them has already met the judge and been given the place that they will live for eternity.  I just know that here, it’s been a weird day with the news of these 2 deaths.

Still Here

Yes, I’m still here.  I’ve just been enjoying some time away from the computer.  Well, you can almost call it that!!  HAHA

We had a great Father’s Day together.  It’s one of the only one’s we’ve had where there was no work or schedule to keep.  It was really a good day.  It started with Miss K being the only alter server and Father praising her for how good she did.  It’s tough to do alone and she did it without batting an eye.  The Deacon was of some help and told her she did good also.  In fact, she had to ring the bell, which she’d never done before!!  We had a nice dinner of chili dogs at home because we’d already taken him out for his special dinner Saturday night.

I’m also still working on these landmark and monument cards.  They’re a chore!!  I ended up with 20 pages and there’s 10 cards on each page.  The pictures was the easy part, now I’m working on the backs.  I’m putting where it’s located and then a brief description about it.  Let me tell you, it’s hard to condense a page of info into a 2 x 3 card!!  SHEESH  It was stressing me out so bad that hubby said I was only allowed to do a couple cards a day.  It’s going to take forever, but it’s been good.  I don’t feel so stressed.

I haven’t really felt the need to blog because I’m getting very few comments.  I know people are reading, but I don’t know who they are or what they’re reading.  It sort of sucks when there’s no comments.  I must say, Debbie always comments on every post when she’s doing her catching up though.  Personally, without the comments, it’s like why write if nobody cares….if they cared, they’d comment.  I know I don’t comment every time I read a blog, but I try to comment every now and then so they know I’ve been there.

Other than, just enjoying each other and the a/c.  It’s been hot and it’s only getting hotter.  Summer is here!!  We still have the turtle.  He’s a bit spoiled and he just loves strawberries.  I still think that’s funny.  He’ll eat them first!!  He goes for a walk either in the house or outside a couple times a week.  I think we average about 3 times.  At least once is always outside.  We love watching him plow through the grass and seeing the dogs follow him.  If we can’t find him, Big Boy will sniff him out for us!!  HAHA

Alright, I’m caught up now.  Ya’ll take care and drop me a note sometime!!  I’d love to know who’s reading and what they’re reading!!

OUT….

World Landmarks and Monuments

I know….I know, I was absent from blogging yesterday.  I took on this project to make cards for landmarks and monuments all over the world.  The front has a picture of each location and then the back will have brief information.  I had no idea this project was going to get this big!!

The more I looked, the more I found.  There’s places that I never even knew about.  It seems that some tv towers are even considered a landmark or monument.  I can say that I have traveled the world now!!  I’ve seen so many different places, and I’m learning about some of them as I go.  Tonight, I finally finished the front of the cards.  I was going to do 6 pages of them, with 10 on each page.  Then I increased it to 10, and then I figured that I might as well make it an even dozen.  Well let me just say that that grew as well!!

I had places around the world on the cards, then I remembered that there’s so much to see in the U.S. as well.  That meant I had to start researching for the best spots in America.  There’s no way that I could list them all because we have so many national parks and such.  What I did find definitely filled in the gaps.

So I imagine that you’re wondering what the final total was of cards that I made.  Well, it didn’t stop at 12!!  I got it up to 16 pages, then my wonderful daughter suggested that I could find more and make it a nice even number.  So what was my nice even number that I finished with tonight??  HAHA  When I was done, I had 20 pages with 10 locations each on them!!  I told you that I traveled the world.

Now mind you, that’s only the images that are done.  I still have to get all the information for the backs of the cards.  WWEEEE!!  Around the world I go again.  I truly can’t wait to find out more about these places though.  Some of them are so beautiful and well, some aren’t.  They each mean something or have some significance though.  It’s going to be an interesting ride!!

I’m going to post a new poll, so please be sure to vote.  This one will have to do with travel!!  I’m outtie before I miss my ride for the next trip….

P.S.  I’m going to share the cards when they’re completed!!

Father’s Day Crafts

With Father’s Day just days away, I thought I’d share some fun crafts with you for the handyman in your house.  The kids can make these crafts and cards for the do-it-yourself dad or grandpa!!

First, there’s a great printable tool box activity from Printables4Kids.com with the toolbox and tools for the craft.  The directions are simple for kids of any age to be able to complete this project.  There’s a printable gift card holder tool box at Disney Family Fun.  There’s also a printable Daddy’s Helper toolbox complete with directions and templates (toward the bottom of the page).  Glinda found this Daddy’s Helper toolbox craft and I wanted to share it because it’s right on theme!!  You can find a Father’s Day card craft made from construction paper with a template to add a few tools to the toolbox.  There’s another toolbox card here.  There’s a fun craft for a mini-toolbox made from an empty Altoids can!!

I also did my own take on the do-it-yourself dad.  I used one of the toolboxes above and put “Have a Blessed Father’s Day” on the toolbox.  Then I found some tools and put some Father’s Day related Bible verses on each tool.  You can download my toolbox and tools here.  (I used the toolbox from Printables4Kids.com.)  Cut out each of the tools and color.  They can be laminated if you choose.  The toolbox should be cut out and glued around the edges to a piece of construction paper….maybe dad’s favorite color!!  Personalize any way that you choose for the handyman in the kid’s life!!

Virtues and Character Education

Miss K has always been taught right from wrong, how to use her manner and be a good person.  Sometimes though, it takes more than just teaching and practicing that.  It’s especially important for this day and time.

One thing that many homeschool families use is The Book of Virtues.  I’ve recently found some good materials online to go along with this book.  I’d like to share them with you in hopes that it might help with your lessons and discussions with the book.  First, there’s a lesson plan for approxomately 5th grade.  Next, the Shiver Academy, a homeschool family, has a complete lesson that you can get unit by unit on the right side of the page (if you have dial-up) or you can the entire lesson, but please note that it’s almost 1,000 pages.  It has worksheets, vocabulary, copywork, lapbook, and more!!  You’ll find the entire post dated June 8 or in the right column as I already stated.  There is a very thorough book list for children of all ages for characters, manners and virtue.  This is a lesson in PDF format that has some really good links for more in-depth studies.  You’ll find a Catholic lesson in PDF format for “Save Enviroment” that has to do with making right choices for grade 7.  There’s a bibliography of books, stories, and web sites for character education.  Here is a HTML version of a lesson that’s also avaialbe in DOC format.  This is for college level, but has some very interesting materials, as well as reading materials.  Here’s another list of character educataion literature.  There are some great complete lessons with printables for younger students.  Please note that this is prepared  by someone for the Baha’i, but other than a few quotes and other items, they’re just your basic lesson.  Don’t miss out on this material because of it since it can easily be eliminated and is very useful.  There’s another Catholic lesson plan for grades 4-6 where students will learn and recognize the 7 virtues.  You’ll also find a whole site devoted to good character with teaching guides for every grade level.  Here’s a lesson plan for the Character Counts manual and it’s a big PDF file!!  CurrClick has a unit study for sale on character education and here is their list of products you can purchase pertaining to character education.  This is a list of lessons and other materials under the theme of character education on “A to Z Teacher Stuff”.

I think that about covers all the materials that I was able to find.  I know there’s more, but I’ve just started my planning for next year and this is what I have so far.  I hope you don’t miss out on some of these lessons because they’re Catholic or something else that you’re unfamiliar with.  All of them can be adapted to suit your use, but they’re a great place to start.  I’ll update if I find any other good materials on this topic!!

Place Value

**EDIT & UPDATE**  Please see the bottom of this post for a change to one of the downloads.

One math concept that’s often hard to understand is place value.  Kiddo doesn’t have much issue with this, but I still wanted something that she could use to review what she’s learned.  Next year, she’ll be doing place value to the millionths.  That’s quite a ways on the right side of the decimal point!!  I created 2 games today to help children learn about place value and it works on their skills the entire time they play the game.

The first file folder game is Place the Value and works on place value from the ones to the billions place.  There are 2 sets of question cards.  One set has the answers on the cards and the other set doesn’t.  The set without is for those that want an individual to work on place value and don’t have anyone to read the question card.  There is an answer key provided to self-check the answers.  The set with answers is for more than one player games.  An opponent will read the question and know if the player answered correctly.  This game is complete with a die and player tokens.

The second file folder game is The Value of a Decimal with place values from the ones place, down to the billionths.  That is 9 spaces to the right of the decimal!!  This game has 2 sets of question cards as well for those that might only need it for an individual.  As with the game above, it has the answer key, player tokens and a die.

With both of these file folder games, it doesn’t have to be played up to the highest or lowest place value.  You can just play it with the place values that are currently being worked on and save all your place tokens and questions for a time when they’re needed.

As with all my games, please be sure to get all the pages.  I can’t say it enough, I don’t understand why someone would want to get 4 of 6 pages.  You’re just not getting the complete game and also not able to play the game the way that it’s meant to be played.

For my little “bonus” tonight for my readers, I have a set of Animal ABC’s cards with Storage Box.  This is a set of cards that uses pictures of real animals and has an upper and lower case card.  The first letter of each animal name is also highlighted so that the kids can recognize the relation between the 2.  It also has a storage box for the cards.  Some uses for these cards could be to use them as flashcards, concentration (memory), or a number of other game suggestions on the cards!!

I hope that you all can use these shares tonight and that the kids really have fun playing while they learn!!  If you like the file folder games and other materials that you see here or if you use them, PLEASE leave a comment and let me know!!  I have no other way to know if my materials get used or not!!

**EDIT & UPDATE**  It was suggested by DMarie in a comment that I used a different animal for the letters c, g, and s.  The animals that I used didn’t really work with pronunciation of those letters.  I have changed those 3 cards and also included a blank card in case there’s an animal that you’d rather use.  The cards were cheetah, giraffe, and sheep.  They are now camel, gull, and squirrel.  You can download these replacements if you’d like.
