Monthly Archives: September 2008
Well, Laura has tagged me again. This time it’s the 7 Things meme. After my wild, busy and fun long weekend, this is really going to make me think!! First off, I’ll start with the rules. The rules are as follows:
1. Post the rules on your blog.
2. Write 7 random things about yourself.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post.
4. Pass on the tag.
Now, let’s see if I can think of 7 things about myself. I don’t know if I can find anything interesting. HAHA Alright, on with it!! 7 Things about me are:
1. I love being a MOM more than anything in this world.
2. We have a DVD collection of about 1,000 or more with everything ranging from classics to new releases and musicals to suspense.
3. It was always my dream to be a teacher, probably ever since I was in 2nd grade. I never finished college or became that teacher, but yet it’s come full circle. I homeschool my daughter and I taught her even before that because she went to school knowing how to count, say her abc’s, write her name and more!! I also get to teach 4 & 5 year olds about our faith by being a catechist for our religion class.
4. I’m one of few Army wives who actually loves Army life despite all it’s thrown at us.
5. I’m the only one in my family that doesn’t wear glasses. However, I do use reading glasses, but nothing more.
6. I didn’t have Miss K, my one and only kiddo, until I was 30.
7. I’m a dog lover and don’t like cats much at all.
Now onto the tag!! If you don’t have time to do this or you’ve already done it, don’t feel obligated to have to play along. Although, if you’ve already done it, you could just post a link to your original post so that we can all check it out!! So, the 7 people that I’m going to tag are:
1. Dawn @ Dawn’s Diversions
2. Debbie @ Mommie Mayhem
3. Elaine @ What the…
4. Soul Pockets
5. Angie @ 7 Clown Circus
6. Leah @ Diaries of a Domestic Goddess
7. Christina @ Mustard Seeds
Even if your name isn’t on this list, I’d love to know more about you, so feel free to play along!!
The party is over and the family is gone. I wrote a couple posts over the weekend, but I didn’t have time to proof them and post them. I just barely got on enough to even write anything. However, as today moves on, I’ll reread them and then get them posted. Miss K will also be posting all about her birthday party.
Over the next couple of days, I’ll also get caught up on all my blogs that I read and comment. It’ll take a bit, but I’ll be all caught up soon!!
I also did my new feature post that I told you all about earlier. Just no time to do everything I wanted!! We had a house full!! PHEW!!
Catch you all soon and please be watching for all the posts I did over the long weekend!! Please note, they’ll appear under this one because they were wrote over the weekend, I just didn’t get them posted. So, stay tuned!!
Right from the beginning, Army life was interesting. The man and I had dated for quite awhile. He told me that he’d gone down and talked to a recruiter and was thinking about joining the Army. We talked about it alot and decided that it would probably be a good idea. I wasn’t sure where we were going from there, but he had to do this. He joined in September 1988 and I saw changed in him right away. A few weeks later, I received a letter proposing marriage. I was ecstatic to say the least!! I went to his graduation from Basic Training in December with his best friend and told him “yes”. The plans were on!!
He went to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) immediately after graduation. I found a wedding dress that I wanted and bought it. I picked out invitations and flowers. We had set a date for April 1989. This would be right after he finished his schooling. He came home for Christmas exodus and we finalized plans for the wedding. Next thing I know, Lean Green calls me and informs me that as soon as he graduates from AIT, they’re sending him to Germany. The wouldn’t give him any time to come home and get married.
I wouldn’t hear of this and he felt pretty much the same so an alternative plan was made. He talked to his Drill Sergeant and was given permission to get married at school. He had to find out the marriage laws and such for Maryland, which is where his AIT was. We needed 5 days to apply for the marriage license and the waiting period. I took vacation time. My carry-on bag was packed with my wedding dress, our champagne glasses and everything needed for a wedding. The bag I checked had all my clothes and other items, but I at least knew that I was going to have my wedding dress!!
We applied for our marriage license and had our waiting period. We had very short evenings together, after his classes were done. My parents drove all the way up and brought his mom with them. We went to city hall with 4 fellow soldiers, him mom and my parents. I got dressed in my gown in the ladies bathroom. My held the door for me and we were married by the JP. We laughed through the whole thing while the best man joked about my cleavage and various other things. At one point, the judge stopped and told us that we had to have “less fun”. We signed the register that went back so many years. It was interesting just looking through that book. We took a few pictures and were off to the restaurant for lunch. We parted way with our family members and the other soldiers and had our honeymoon of 2 days at a local hotel. That was after the soldiers had a $1 dance with me in the barracks parking lot!!
I was back on a plane and headed for home and he was back to classes. The next time I saw him was for 2 days before he flew to Germany and we were on our exciting adventure called Army life!!
The next installment of Army Life will be “Germany”.
I’ll be adding pictures to this post, but had a hard time locating them. Please check back!!
The man with the most beautiful blue eyes in Hollywood died 26 September 2008. We are now less yet one more classic movie actor. Paul Newman died yesterday from complications due to lung cancer at the age of 83.
I shouldn’t be surprised that he died. He was, after all, 83 years old. He’s battled cancer for a few years now. However, he’s one of my favorites and it seems like we’ve lost so much. There’s no actors or actresses in Hollywood any more like Paul Newman or any of the other classic movie starts. He may not have acted any more, but at least you knew that he was still there. He was still a part of our society. Now he’s gone. Think about who’s left. Robert Redford is 72 and Clint Eastwood is 78. Elizabeth Taylor is 76. I can’t say it enough, there’s just not that many classic movie stars left and the ones that are left are all up in age.
Some of Paul Newman’s greatest movies that he was known for are: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor, Eddie Felson in The Hustler, Hud, Hombre, The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Robert Redford, The Verdict, The Color of Money and many other great movies. He won 3 Golden Globe Awards, a Cannes Film Festival Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Emmy and an Academy Award. Paul Newman was also a director.
Among his other interests away from the big screen, Paul Newman was a racing enthusist, business owner and humanitarian. He was the co-founder of Newman’s Own food company. All profits from that company went to charity. Sources say his donations amount in millions of dollars. Newman also served in the Navy during World War II.
One of his greatest achievements was not his career. It was his marriage. He was first married to Jackie Witte, whom he had 3 children with. They were married from 1949-1958. He then married Joanne Woodward. He married her in 1958 and they had 3 daughters. They were still married 50 years later when he passed away.
Today, my baby is no longer a baby. Well, she really hasn’t been for awhile, but she’s making that much more clear NOW!! She’s informed us all that in just 2 years she’ll be a teen and although she’s our baby, she’s NOT a baby!! HAHA
So to you my dear daughter whom I love so much….
I hope you have a great day, Miss K because you deserve it. I know your party this year will be small, but remember the people who love you the most will all be here. You’re a special girl and a great kid. Even as you go through all these new changes in your life, I love you more than anything and I’ll always stand by you. So HAPPY 11th BIRTHDAY KIDDO!!
There will pictures for all my readers of the Devine Miss K tomorrow!! Watch how she changes!!
The first great resource that I have to share with you is for homeschoolers. However, any parent will find something of interest on this site. The site is Homeschool Freebie of the Day and they offer a new free download every single day. You have to keep on top of it though because each offer is only good for ONE day. Yes, that’s right, there’s a new freebie to download every day. Sometimes it’s an MP3 or sometimes it’s PDF book. Whatever the resource available, it’s always a good one!! Oh and I almost forgot to mention that if you join the “Heads Up” mailing list, you’ll know what the freebie is going to be every day. On top of that, there’s always a bonus freebie link right in the newsletter!! I highly encourage you to check it out!!
The next item isn’t a freebie, but it is something that’s been talked about on this blog before. This one is about boobs!!
The 2008 Boobie-Thon begins on 1 October 2008!! This is a great events that promotes breast cancer awareness. This is their 7th Annual Blogger Boobie-Thon and they’re doing awesome things. They raise money to help others and encourage all women to get their yearly squished boob exam. Did I mention that I’m going to be honored enough to have the “Squished Boob Award” mentioned on the site?? Yes, I notified them that I had the award as my way of encouraging women to get their yearly exams. They e-mailed me back to let me know that they love all things boobie and would be sure to include a link to my post on their site when the Boobie-Thon begins!! How awesome is that!?!? Please be sure to check out Boobie-Thon to find out how you can help breast cancer awareness and this cause. While you’re there, be sure to pick up your button or badge to post on your site too!!
I also feel the need to inform my female blog readers about “Official Bitch Day”. It takes place on 1 October 2008.
For the first time ever women of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to let it all out and let their true feelings heard. Fabulously40 will allow you to gain freedom and liberation, by bitching about everything and anything, in a safe, protected environment. The day will be full of bitching events. Win prizes, meet women, and most importantly- LET IT ALL OUT! And that’s a direct quote from the website!! Check it out at Fabulously 40 – Let’s Bitch.
I’m not much of a television person. I only watch certain shows. When our tv is on, it’s usually on classic movies. The whole family loves those!!
However, this week is huge for us. Over the summer, I got hooked on “CSI: Miami” and can’t wait to find out what happens to H. “Dancing with the Stars” is starting again and I can’t wait to see how our gold medal volleyball player does. I think Cloris Leachman will be a hoot!! “CSI” will be starting this week. Last season, the season finale literally blew me away!! I can’t wait to see what the hell is going to happen this season!! I do think it’s on it’s final leg though. “Survivor” starts. That’s the one reality show I never miss. I’ve watched it from the beginning. I keep saying that if I didn’t have diabetes, I’d go out there and try out in a heartbeat. I’m hooked and I’ve gotten my parents hooked too!! Then there’s “NCIS”, which I often miss, but I just have to see what’s going to happen after that finale.
Anything on Wednesday nights is impossible for me to see. I don’t even get near a tv. However, somehow between everything else that’s going on, I’m going to find some tv time this week. I love when the new seasons start and everything is fresh again.
Will you be watching any of the old shows that are returning?? Are you looking forward to any of the new shows??
As many of you know, I have a couple blogging things that I do every week. I guess you’d call them memes. I usually do my Wordless Wednesday and try to do the Thursday Thirteen. I’ve also done a Photostory Friday and attempted a couple other’s, but never really stick to them. Debbie does her “Flashback Friday” and it’s one of my favorite features of her blog. She also did a story about where she lives/grew up. I thought that was such a great idea!! I mentioned to her that I should do one on Army life and she told me I really should. She said she’d like to read about it and I figure Army life is something that most people either don’t understand or know much about.
So, I decided it’s time to implement that new feature on my blog. Every Sunday or as often as possible (and I can keep you interested), I’ll blog about Army life. Mind you, this won’t be everyone’s view of the Army, but it’ll be OUR life and views of the Army. As many of you faithful readers know, Lean Green will be retiring soon. His retirement ceremony is in November, he’ll “work” for a couple weeks and then he’ll go on leave (vacation). During that time, he’ll be looking for a job and getting ready for our “new life”. This is all time that he’s saved up and can get paid for or use. Anyway, I ramble off subject!! HAHA He’ll officially be out of the Army on 1 March 2008.
My first post will be next week and my new feature will simply be titled “Army Life”. I hope this is something that you all will be interested in. I’ll discuss everything from the beginning of our life together to medical care to war to acronyms to retirement. I’d love it if you told me things that you’d like to know more about. Please feel free to ask questions about the topic that week or tell me what you’d like to know about the next feature post.
We’ve never been listed in the church directory. Now that we have a new priest, he’s doing many updates that are long over due. One of the updates is to get a new church directory. They brought in Olan Mills and scheduled all parishoners an appointment. We got all dressed up and headed out for our family photo that was to appear in the new church directory.
We weren’t thrilled after our appointment and they tried to sell us other packages. They show you all the great poses that you tookand get you all interested in buying a package. I was all ready to do it until they told us the prices. Then they wouldn’t work out when we could pay with us. Mind you, they don’t tell you the cost before you look at your poses. So the salesman said “I guess you just want the directory photo then” and I said a simple yes.
Yesterday in the mail, we got a small package (enveolope) from Olan Mills. I couldn’t imagine what it was since I have no intention of ever paying that much for pictures. Much to my surprise, it was a complimentary picture. It’s an 8×10 of the photo that will appear in the church directory. That photo of my happy family is below. Isn’t it a great picture of us!?!?
This is a video clip of a model falling on the catwalk. She not only falls once….she falls TWICE!! It’s so funny!! And I don’t know what’s funnier….watching her wobble in the shoes or the anchors reactions. I love the comment “at least I got enough meat on me that it’s alright!!” just cracks me up!!
In this clip, a performer in on the runway and leaves a hole in the runway floor. The next model out falls right through!! Now aren’t we glad that she had panties on!! HAHA
This one, the designer falls right through the catwalk!! Then the guys that come to her rescue fall too!!
This one is from “America’s Next Top Model”. Tyra tells her to slow down when she makes it to the end and she maintains without falling. Until she exits the runway and ends up crawling off!!
Oh my….and for this one, something slips and falls, but it’s not the model!!
Now I know it’s wrong to laugh at someone else’s “pain”, but I just can’t help myself. You prance yourself down a runway or catwalk on a regular basis. You don’t sleep. You barely eat, if you do eat at all. Half the time, you puke up the bit you do eat. I’ll take my chunky butt any day. At least I have the padding and I bounce pretty well too!! I’m sure people have had plenty of laughs at my expense and I sure did have a good laugh at these!!
It’s my intention to post my CCD/religious education lesson that I did with my students tonight. However, my knee is killing me and I’m trying to keep it wrapped nice and warm under a blankie. Plus, I’m pretty tired. Please stay tuned for me to update this post tomorrow and share some of the stuff I worked on with my class tonight.
I also apologize for not replying to comments today. It was a busy homeschool day and then CCD tonight. I promise I’ll get back to you all as soon as I have a free minute tomorrow. Your comments mean alot to me and I cherish all of them.

So, for my I am Special/God Made Me lesson, the kids really had fun. The first thing that I do is pass a mirror around and have each student look in it. I then ask, “what did you see?” and “do you look like anyone else?” and I get varied answers.
One of the worksheets I use is All About Me from Crayola. They color it to match their hair, eyes and skin. I even try to get the to color their clothes to what they’re wearing for that class. We practiced the “I Am Special” song found here and here, about half way down the page. It didn’t take them long to get the actions down because it’s fairly simple and a tune that they know. We then went to sing to the Primary II (1st grade) class next door. They loved it and then did a song for us and had us join in. Next, we went over to the office and sang for DRE and her assistant. They did great!! They even got a lollipop for their performance!!
The final thing that we did was to do im-thumbody-special craft project. I put a line on the top of the page for each student to write their name. I also copied this to an off white/tan paper for skin tone. I then had the kids put their thumb on an ink pad. They made their eyes and nose with their thumb print. Then they picked a color for the mouth and I stuck the whole side of their pinkie on the ink pad. They laid that on the paper and it made a smile. After that, we took the paper back to the table and colored our hair and earrings for girls that had them.
Finally, I tie “I am Special/God Made Me” to Joseph. Joseph was special to his father and that’s why he receieved the Coat of Many Colors. That’s also why his brothers were jealous and tried to kill him. However, Joseph was special to God as well. That’s why he survived it all and became a strong figure in Egypt. Joseph became a man of power because of his belief in God and being chosen by God. There’s many books that have the story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors. Last night, I used Bible Stories to Draw and Tell. We also did a hidden picture and maze from one of my many workbooks.
The kids really loved the lesson. I could tell because they were so happy and asked for more!! I think the thumb print craft was their favorite. They all went home with a bit of an ink stain, but it was worth it!!
