Oh and what a day for the Olympics it has been. Dara Torres won silver in the 50m freestyle and then literally had to hustle off the podium to race in the women’s 400m medley relay as anchor and got silver there too. She is 41 years old and the oldest American swimmer to date!! (Just a bit of trivia, she was born exactly ONE day before me!!) A guy by the name of Mellouli won the 1500m freestyle winning the first ever gold medal in swimming for his country of Tunisia. A 38 year old woman by the name of Constantina Tomescu-Dita won the gold medal for Romania in the Olympic women’s marathon. About half way through the race, she pulled ahead of the pack and stayed there. As you watched this, you couldn’t even see the group behind her. Usain Bolt proved that he really is the world’s fastest man by breaking the world record and winning gold in the 100m for Jamaica. Dreams really can come true!!
There was more action today in ladies beach volleyball and handball, men’s fencing and table tennis, and basketball. Oh, and did I mention swimming?? Yes, there was just a little swimming today. There was also just a little Michael Phelps today in the swimming pool. Michael Phelps won his record breaking 8th gold medal with the help of teammates Piersol, Hansen and Lezak for the 400m medley relay. In the process, they also broke the world record time for that race. Yet through it all, Phelps still remains humble and says “he can’t wait to get home”. Yet more proof that dreams do come true!!
Today’s total medal count is:
|Trinidad and Tobago||0||1||0||1|
I know this list is getting long. I just can’t bring myself to trim it down. I don’t think anyone should be left off. Receiving just one medal makes you worthy to be on the list. And look at that range of countries. You have everything from the dominating United States to Australia to Czech Republic and New Zealand to Egypt, Tajikistan, and Trinidad and Tobago. I just can’t leave any of them off!!
Miss K still has no medals to track, but they are qualifying for the track and field events as well as some of the others that are yet to come into their finals. I’m hoping that she’ll have at least one chance to cheer them on because she really enjoyed researching them. She’s become a bit of an Aussie fan though!!
With that, I’m off. I’m heading to be bed early tonight. Big day tomorrow and then the Schoolhouse begins on Monday!!
