Let the Games Begin!!

Opening Ceremony at the 2008 Olympics

The Olympic games have begun!!  China started the 2008 Olympic games with grand flare in Beijing, China.  It was quite a show to kick off the XXIX Olympiad.  Of course, I only saw it in pictures.  What I enjoyed most was seeing all the Olympic teams entering.  Their flags held high as they waved to the crowd.  Most of these athletes are mere kids.  The thrill they must be feeling.  The adults too.  This is a dream for many.  I can’t fully support holding the Olympics in China, but I’m glad these athletes have this chance to show what they’re made of.  To be able to fulfill a dream.  Some of the countries have so few representatives.  Some have so many.  Every country wears their colors with pride and waves the flag high.

I’ve always loved to watch the Olympics.  I have my favorite events for both the summer and winter.  I usually wait for the Olympics with anticipation.  Miss K caught the fever early too.  I truly enjoy keeping track of the events and the medal count.  So, here’s the current medal count:

  Gold Silver Bronze Total
China 1 0 0 1
Czech Republic 1 0 0 1
Russia 0 1 0 1
Turkey 0 1 0 1
Croatia 0 0 1 1
Taiwan 0 0 1 1

Unfortunately, the U.S. isn’t on that list yet.  This might not be such a successful year for us.  Our men’s gymnastics team is hurting.  Without the Hamm twins, we have little home of taking a medal in that event.  Medals don’t matter in the end anyway, do they??  HA!!  That’s a hard one.  There’s a certain amount of pride in saying “we took home ____ amount of medals at the Olympics”.  Ah, but the sportsmanship and camaraderie.

To me the worst thing they ever did with the Olympics was to let these pros start to play.  These aren’t pro events.  They’re amateurs, or at least they’re supposed to be.  That’s the way it was originally designed.  I don’t have issues with the way they broke up the winter and summer and winter games.  I rather enjoy that.  Now I get Olympic events every 2 years!!

So, are you a fan of the Olympics??  Will you be watching as your time permits??

AAWWWW I’m sorry you don’t enjoy them. Honestly though, not many women do enjoy sports. I don’t love all sports, just certain ones get my “fancy” and I truly enjoy the Olympics since I was a kid.

Try to enjoy them!! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I really like reading yours and try hard to keep up with it!!

I really love watching the Olympics! We did a unit on the Olympics this week with the kids, culminating with our own family Olympics last night, a special dinner, and then letting everyone who wanted to stay up for the entire opening ceremony.

Our kids are so excited about the Olympics this year! I think they must be at that age… we stayed up and watched the opening ceremony till 1.30 am – they thought that was pretty cool!
Thanks for all the links and posts to Olympics stuff. I have some on my blog as well, and also some simple free notebooking ebooks in case anyone is interested 🙂

Just wanted to let you know that a homeschooler from Colorado, Becca Ward, won the Bronze medal for Sabre Fencing. And the US actually took all 3 medals in this event.

I’m so glad you participate as a family, Angie. We’re working on Olympics too. It’s what we’re doing for the 2 weeks leading up to our school starting. My daughter had to pick a country, research it and follow it during the Olympics. I found some great material this year!!

Thanks for commenting, Joy!! I’m glad your kids are excited. My daughter is too. Even I am!! I’ve always loved the Olympics and remember watching as a kid.

I checked out your pages. They’re great!! Thanks so much for the share!!

Yes Diane, I’ve been following closely!! How exciting is that!?!? It’s even more awesome that it’s a homeschooled girl!!

I haven’t gotten into it yet. I did see a short stint of the mens gymnastics on the rings last night. And then a blurb of womens swimming. I run hot and cold on the Olympics. If I start watching, more than likely I’ll keep watching. But otherwise, the time will just pass and I’ll get the summary on the news. Of course I like all the girlie sports…gymnastics, ice skating. The last winter Olympics I was fascinated with the snowboarding.

I like summer and winter Olympics. I think with kiddo taking such an interest, I’m even more into it. It’s just so much fun!! Don’t miss too much, Debbie. Some of these events are real nail biters!!
